Men’s Basketball
The University of Missouri–St. Louis men’s basketball team battled No. 2 seed Upper Iowa into overtime Thursday night in the opening round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament, but the Tritons couldn’t survive an 8-0 run in the extra frame and lost 91-84 at Hyland Arena in St. Charles, Missouri. Nick Reid hit back-to-back 3-pointers during the decisive surge, which turned a 76-75 UMSL lead into a an 83-76 deficit after two free throws by Caleb Delzell with 1:02 remaining. The Tritons missed four straight shots as the Peacocks pulled away, and UMSL never got closer than five points in the final minute. Reid had 13 points and Delzell finished with 13 and 10 points, respectively, but Upper Iowa was led by Jake Hilmer, who had 34 points and went 21 for 22 from the free-throw line. It also got 21 points from Noah King. Matt Enright led UMSL with 19 points before fouling out with 54 seconds remaining. Terrell Kabala had 18 points on 7-for-10 shooting, and the Tritons also got 17 from Emanuel Prospere II, 13 from Savon Wykle and 10 points and 15 rebounds from Troy Glover II. UMSL ended its season with a 13-16 record.

Women’s Basketball
The Tritons couldn’t overcome their cold shooting in a season-ending 65-51 loss to top-seeded Lewis last Thursday in the opening round of the GLVC Tournament at Hyland Arena. UMSL connected on only 33.3% of its field goal attempts and was just 2 of 10 from 3-point range against the Flyers. Audrey Martinez-Stewart finished with a team-high 12 points, and Amaya Blake and Mara Rieder had 10 each, but the three combined to shoot only 14 for 38. Tritons leading scorer Jalysa Stokes was held to six points while going 3 for 8 from the field. UMSL couldn’t keep up with Lewis, which got 20 points from Jenna Badali and connected on 22 of 35 (62.9%) through the first three quarters while building a 57-38 advantage. The Flyers went on to knock off Maryville and Drury over the weekend to claim their sixth GLVC championship and first since 2013. The Tritons finished the season 13-16.

Softball
UMSL went 5-3 last week while taking part in The Spring Games in Auburndale and Winter Haven, Florida. The Tritons beat Winona State 2-1 and Wayne State of Nebraska 5-1 and won three in a row against fifth-ranked Grand Valley State (4-3), Indiana of Pennsylvania (6-2) and Wayne State of Michigan (9-4), but they also dropped games to Minnesota Duluth (6-1), Grand Valley State (9-1, five innings) and Trivecca Nazarene (8-0, six innings). Sophomore pitcher Ashley Borowitz collected three of the victories, including a complete-game win over Winona State in which she did not allow an earned run and struck out four. Irene Travis and Courtney Settles combined for 13 hits over the final five games – four of them UMSL wins – last week. The pair combined for five hits and three RBI against Wayne State of Michigan on Sunday. The Tritons (12-10) were scheduled to wrap up The Spring Games on Monday with games against Lake Erie College and Salem. UMSL will open GLVC play on Saturday with a doubleheader at William Jewell and will also meet Rockhurst for two games on Sunday.

Baseball
The Tritons blitzed Bemidji State in a double-header last Monday, winning 24-5 and 15-2. Bryce Kulinski tied the school’s single game record with five hits, including hitting for the cycle, and drove in five runs in the Game 1 win. Barrett Rose and Dane Stevenson also homered in the Game 1 rout, while Logan McIntyre hit one over the fence in Game 2. Braedon Stoakes had a team-high three RBI in the second game. Runs were much harder to come by over the weekend as UMSL opened GLVC play at home against Drury, dropping the first three games of the four-game series by scores of 11-1 (seven innings), 3-1 and 11-2 before salvaging the final game 7-6 on Sunday. The Tritons scored the game’s final six runs on Sunday after trailing 6-1 entering the bottom half of the fifth inning. Rose, Andrew Buescher and Jake Isaacs each had two hits in the victory. UMSL pinch runner Jordan Aguallo scored the winning run in the ninth inning on a throwing error by first baseman Luke Burk. The Tritons (9-8, 1-3 GLVC) will open another four-game series at home against Lewis on Friday.

Men’s Tennis
UMSL won a pair of home dual meets over the weekend, beating both Michigan Tech and Southern Indiana by 4-3 scores at UMSL Tennis Courts. No. 1 and No. 5 singles players Jose Mayorga and Tanin Ramnath were unblemished in singles with Mayorga pulling out a 6-7 (6), 6-0, 6-3 win over Michigan Tech’s Jack Lin on Saturday and a more comfortable 6-2, 6-4 victory over Southern Indiana’s Eytan Michaeli on Sunday. Ramnath, meanwhile, won both his singles matches picked up straight-sets wins over the Huskies’ Landon Coates and the Screaming Eagles’ Dylan Brown, dropping a combined seven games in his two singles matches. He also contributed to a pair of doubles victories. Juan Vigil contributed to a doubles victory over Southern Indiana and also pulled out a 6-7 (3), 6-1, 6-2 win over Michigan Tech’s Vitor Jordao in his No. 2 singles match on Saturday. UMSL improved to 5-4 on the season and will next face Drury on the road on March 23.

Women’s Tennis
The Tritons swept dual meets against Michigan Tech and Southern Indiana over the weekend at the UMSL Tennis Courts. They beat the Huskies 7-0 on Saturday before posting a 4-0 victory over the Screaming Eagles on Sunday. UMSL did drop the No. 3 doubles match to Southern Indiana but still won the doubles point thanks to commanding victories by Anna Domingo and Maja Lietzau at No. 1 doubles and Hannah Tse and Anna Favaron at No. 2 doubles. The former won 6-0 while the latter won their match 6-2. In singles, Tse swept Antonia Ferrarini 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3, Domingo beat Rachel McCorkle 6-1, 7-6 (5) at No. 1, and Lietzau clinched the victory with a 7-6 (1), 6-2 victory over Lauren Rowe at No. 2. The other three singles matches went unfinished. The Tritons (5-3) will next play at Drury on March 23.

Men’s Golf
UMSL finished tied for 12th at the Las Vegas Desert Classic played last Monday and Tuesday at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nevada. The host Tritons finished with a combined score of 872 in the 54-hole tournament. Sophomore Leo Baudry led the way with a total of 214 to tie for 20th while seniors Cyril Henault and Zach Unnerstall tied for 40th after posting scores of 219. Lincoln Memorial won the team championship with a combined score of 838. Colorado Christian’s Adam Duncan was the individual medalist with a score of 203. UMSL will next play at Oklahoma Christian’s Oak Tree Invitational beginning March 18 on the East Course at Oak Tree Country Club in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Women’s Golf
The Tritons were tied for sixth after the first day of the Emerald Coast Collegiate at Baytowne Golf Club in Destin, Florida. UMSL posted a combined score of 309 during the tournament’s opening round. Junior Juliette Lecomte led the team with a round of 74 and was in a three-way tie for 12th heading into Monday’s second round. Sophomore Wilma Zanderau shot a round of 77 and is tied for 30th. They’re chasing St. Mary’s Rebecca Reed, who posted an opening round 69. Flagler College had the team lead with a total of 290 after the first day. The tournament continues on Monday and concludes on Tuesday.
