Softball
Ashley Borowitz shined in an otherwise difficult week for the University of Missouri–St. Louis softball team. The sophomore pitcher from Oshkosh, Wisconsin, held fifth-ranked Indianapolis to two runs on seven hits while striking out a career-high 12 batters in the Tritons’ 3-2 victory Friday afternoon in Game 1 of a doubleheader at the UMSL Softball Field. The win snapped the Tritons’ five-game losing streak. The Greyhounds, meanwhile, fell for the first time in 21 games. UMSL got all three of its runs via walks with two outs in the bottom of the third inning after Indianapolis has forced out two runners trying to score from third with the bases loaded. Runs were generally tough to come by for the Tritons throughout the week. They were swept in a nonconference doubleheader against Central Missouri, losing 6-3 and 2-1 last Tuesday, dropped the second game of their doubleheader against Indianapolis 13-2 on Friday and then lost a pair of games by scores of 11-1 and 11-2 against Lewis on Saturday. UMSL (17-19, 4-6 Great Lakes Valley Conference) will take to the road this week with doubleheaders against Missouri S&T on Saturday and Maryville on Sunday.
Baseball
The Tritons saw their seven-game winning streak snapped last Thursday and went on to be swept in four-game series at No. 21 Maryville last week. UMSL lost the opener 14-4 in seven innings on Friday, 13-9 and 5-2 in a doubleheader Friday and dropped the finale 10-9 on Saturday. Mitchell Green hit three home runs and drove in five runs in the series while dividing his time between first base and designated hitter, and right fielder Bryce Kulinski batted .500 with three RBI. Justin Simard and Andrew Buescher also hit home runs in the series. The Tritons (16-13, 8-8 GLVC) will look to return to the win column when they take on William Jewell in a four-game series beginning Friday at the UMSL Baseball Field.
Men’s and Women’s Track and Field
UMSL’s track and field teams sent competitors to Friday’s Washington University Distance Carnival in St. Louis and Saturday’s Joey Haines Invitational, hosted by Southeast Missouri State in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Jonny Key was the top UMSL finisher Friday, placing 50th out of 278 runners in the men’s 5,000-meter race with a time of 15 minutes, 3.26 seconds, and Jacob Warner came in 59th out of 141 runners in the 10,000 with a time of 31:28.13. Key was back on the track Saturday, coming in fourth in the men’s 1,500 with a time of 4:06.29 seconds, edging teammates Toby Middleton, Caleb Leach and Michael Wright, who were fifth, sixth and seventh in the same race. On the women’s side, Kennedy Moore and Makayla Brown were both in the top five in the triple jump. Moore took second with a leap of 38 feet, 9.5 inches, and Brown was fifth with a mark of 37-4. Moore also finished 18th in the high jump after clearing a height of 4-11. Dominica Rooks finished 16th in the women’s 400 meters with a time of 1:04.12. UMSL will race in Illinois College’s True Blue Open on Saturday in Jacksonville, Illinois.
Men’s Golf
The Tritons finished in a tie for seventh out of 17 teams at last week’s Findlay Spring Invitational after posting a combined score of 887 at Boone Trace National Golf Club in Richmond, Kentucky. Sophomore Leo Baudry was UMSL’s top individual finisher, tying for 15th in a field of 90 golfers with a 54-hole total of 217. Senior Zach Unnerstall posted a score of 222, including a final-round 70, and tied for 29th. Cyril Henault and Ben McPherson posted scores of 224 and 225, respectively. Walsh’s Kyle Buzaki was the medalist with a score of 209, and Wayne State took the team title with a total of 853. The Tritons will next play in the Ken Partridge Invitational, hosted by Indianapolis, beginning on Sunday at Purgatory Golf Club in Noblesville, Indiana.
Women’s Tennis
UMSL won a dual meet at the University of Texas at Dallas 4-3 on Monday before dropping duals with Southeastern Oklahoma State 4-0 on Wednesday and Harding 5-2 on Friday. Anna Domingo, Hannah Tse and Aleksandra Lopez all won singles matches for the Tritons against UT Dallas after UMSL took the doubles point. Domingo rallied for a 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 victory in the No. 1 singles match to clinch the Tritons’ victory. Domingo and Lopez were the only UMSL players to win their matches against Harding with Domingo beating Grace Dodd 6-4, 6-4, and Lopez topping Romane Britt 4-6, 6-4, (11-9). The Tritons will play host to Southwest Baptist on Saturday.
Men’s Tennis
The Tritons lost three straight dual meets last week, falling 5-2 at UT Dallas on Monday, 4-2 at Southeastern Oklahoma State on Wednesday and 5-2 at Harding on Friday. Raphael Kerndl went 3-0 for UMSL in No. 2 singles, beating UT Dallas’ Nathan Qi 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (4), winning his match against Southeastern Oklahoma State’s Thabo Ncube after Ncube retired, and topping Harding’s Cas de Ruiter 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Joshua Mackey went 2-0 in singles, beating Southeastern Oklahoma State’s Luis Ching 6-3, 6-3 and rallying for a 5-7, 6-4, (10-1) victory over Harding’s Luis Agullo. The Tritons return home to face Southwest Baptist on Saturday.
