UMSL Tritons weekly rewind

Women’s Golf
The University of Missouri–St. Louis women’s golf team opened its season by placing second in a 16-team field at the Midwest Ladies Collegiate last week at Rock Hollow Golf Club in Peru, Indiana. The Tritons posted a combined score of 900, finishing 25 shots behind first-place Findlay in the 54-hole tournament. Freshman Mayan Covarrubias led UMSL in her first appearance, carding a combined 54-hole score of 5-over-par 221 to place fifth in the 91-player field. She was named to the all-tournament team and later selected the Great Lakes Valley Conference player of the week. Wilma Zanderau joined her in the top 10, placing in a tie for seventh with a score of 222. Hillary Currier was the Tritons’ next best finisher with a score of 229, tied for 20th. UMSL is currently playing in DBU Classic at Robson Ranch Golf Club in Denton, Texas. The Tritons sat in sixth place after Sunday’s first round. Freshman Emmy Wahl and Zanderau both posted opening-round 71s and were tied for eighth. The tournament continues today and concludes on Tuesday.

Volleyball
The fourth-ranked Tritons went 3-1 over the weekend and won the bronze bracket in the Colorado Premiere Challenge, co-hosted by Metropolitan State University of Denver and Regis University in Denver. UMSL beat ninth-ranked West Texas A&M in five sets in Friday’s opener, fell to 24th-ranked Regis in four sets in their second match but won a pair of four-set matches against Seattle Pacific and Wheeling on Saturday. Freshman right-side hitter Alayna Santel led the Tritons in kills throughout the weekend, registering 16 against West Texas A&M, 14 against Regis, 21 against Seattle Pacific and 14 against Wheeling. Sophomore outside hitter Brooklyn Young was second on the team with 41 kills in the tournament. That was one better than junior middle blocker Hannah Copeland, who also had a team-best 16 kills against Wheeling. Junior setter Caitlin Bishop directed UMSL’s attack with 199 assists. The Tritons (7-1) take on McKendree in their home opener on Friday and also play host to Maryville on Saturday before beginning GLVC play.

Women’s Soccer
UMSL routed Newman 5-0 Thursday night in its home opener before losing to Drury 2-1 on the road in Sunday’s GLVC opener. Jada Holloman was the first of five different goal scorers Thursday evening, getting the Tritons on the board in the 13th minute. Josie Maddox and Julie Steiger scored in the first half against Newman, and Gwen Maggard and Julia Murdoch added tallies in the second half as UMSL outshot the visitors 23-2. Offense was harder to come by against the Panthers on Sunday. After a scoreless first half, the Tritons fell behind 2-0 about 20 minutes into the second half. Holloman got UMSL on the board with her fifth goal of the season in the 89th minute, but the Tritons ran out of time before they could pull even. Goalkeeper Mary Kate Neal made five saves. UMSL (3-1, 0-1 GLVC) will look to bounce back when it visits Southwest Baptist on Friday and Rockhurst on Sunday.

Men’s Soccer
The Tritons picked up their second road win of the season last Tuesday when they topped Union 3-2 in Jackson, Tennessee, but they saw that winning streak snapped with a 1-0 loss at Drury in Sunday’s GLVC opener. Jon Campbell delivered the game-winning goal, snapping a 2-2 tie with a penalty kick in the 88th minute on Tuesday evening. Campbell’s third goal of the season followed UMSL goals by Devin Livingstone and Kevin Rios in the second and 61st minutes, respectively. The Tritons couldn’t break through against Drury, which had a 10-9 advantage in shots. The Panthers got their only tally from Lucas Schofield in the 12th minute. Austin Reis made five saves for UMSL. The Tritons (2-2, 0-1 GLVC) will travel to Southwest Baptist on Friday and Rockhurst on Sunday.

Men’s and Women’s Cross Country
UMSL’s men’s team placed 14th in a field of 47 teams at the Southern Showcase, held Friday morning at John Hunt Park in Huntsville, Alabama. The Tritons, who totaled 441 points, were the fourth-highest finished among NCAA Division II teams competing in the event. Benjamin VandenBrink was UMSL’s first runner across the finish line, placed 44th out of 464 runners in the 8-kilometer race with a time of 24 minutes, 53.6 seconds. Jacob Warner was next in 65th place with a time of 25:13.5, and Toby Middleton also cracked the top 100, finishing 93rd in 25:30.5. UMSL also sent runners to the Illinois State Redbird Invite in Bloomington, Illinois. The men were eighth in an eight-team field with 214 points, and Armando Montoya paced the Tritons with a with a time of 27:03.6. On the women’s side, UMSL finished 10th in an 11-team filed with 261 points. Kayley Heeter was the Tritons’ top finisher in the 6-kilometer race with a time of 24:25, good for 45th place, and Ella Tynan and Bridget Ragan joined Heeter among the top 60 individual finishers. UMSL will next race Sept. 28 at the Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Women’s Tennis
The Tritons went unbeaten over the weekend at the Missouri Valley Invitational in Marshall, Missouri. Hannah Tse, Aleksandra Lopez, Anna Favaron, Giuliana Cunza, Morgan Lint and Lauren Sweeney all went 2-0 in round robin play in their respective groups. Tse and Lopez also teamed up to win the doubles bracket, and Favaron and Cunza reached the semifinals. UMSL next plays on Sept. 27 against Missouri Baptist at the Lindenwood Tennis Courts.

Men’s Tennis
Bauty Rooney and Percy Siercke each went 3-1 in singles play and advanced to the semifinals as UMSL opened its season at the Missouri Valley Invitational. Siercke also teamed with Joan Garros to reach the semifinals in the doubles competition. Rooney and Tanin Ramnath also advanced to the semifinals as a doubles tandem. The Tritons are idle until Sept. 27, when they’ll take on Missouri Baptist at the Lindenwood Tennis Courts.
