Around 250 University of Missouri–St. Louis students, faculty, staff and alumni were on hand to witness the St. Louis Blues triumphing over the Vancouver Canucks in a thrilling 4-3 overtime win last Thursday at the Enterprise Center. The UMSL community turned out to support the hometown team as part of UMSL Night at the St. Louis Blues, hosted by the UMSL Alumni Association.
The back-and-forth game kept fans on the edge of their seats. The Blues were poised to bring home a 3-2 win in the closing minutes of the third period, but Vancouver’s Brock Boeser tied the game with four seconds left in regulation. However, the Blues clawed back a win when defenseman Philip Broberg scored on a two-on-one rush with just over a minute left in the sudden-death overtime period.
UMSL social media manager Valerie Furlong was on hand to capture some of the festivities as members of the UMSL community added a splash of red in the arena stands in Downtown St. Louis.
The UMSL contingent filled seats all the way to the top of the Enterprise Center’s upper level.
One lucky UMSL fan made it onto the jumbotron during the first period.
Another UMSL fan was enlisted for a jumbotron interview during the second period.
UMSL students, faculty, staff and alumni had access to discounted tickets for the event.
Each ticket also came with an UMSL winter hat.
Attendees were also entered into a raffle for a special St. Louis Blues experience.
The crowd enjoyed what turned out to be an exciting contest. The game started slow in the first and second periods before a flurry of five goals in the third period, with the Blues scoring twice in 24 seconds at one point.
St. Louis rode the momentum of Thursday’s overtime win, notching decisive wins against the Chicago Blackhawks and Nashville Predators this past weekend. Currently, the team leads the Calgary Flames by four points for the second Western Conference wild card slot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
