The University of Missouri–St. Louis baseball team took two of out three games against Maryville over the weekend as it secured a spot in this week’s Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament. The Tritons will be seeded eighth in the double-elimination tournament and will take on top-seeded Lewis in a first-round matchup on Wednesday at Mountain Dew Park in Marion, Illinois. UMSL secured its spot in the field by surviving battles with the Saints and Mother Nature over the weekend. Wet conditions forced the series to be moved from UMSL to Maryville’s Weber Field. After getting in two games on Friday, the first game of a scheduled Saturday doubleheader was interrupted by rain for more than six hours, then called after the top of the fifth with the Tritons leading 4-0. The second game was canceled. Andrew Buescher put UMSL ahead early on Saturday with an RBI single in the first. After the Tritons tacked on a second run thanks to a Barrett Rose sacrifice fly in the third, Cade Grevengoed blasted a two-run home run to cap the scoring. Dustin Hagens, Nate Kemp and Bryce Stenzel combined for five shutout innings in the victory. UMSL split Friday’s doubleheader, taking the first game with a commanding pitching performance by Zach Haygood, who tossed a complete game shutout with three hits allowed while striking out two in a 6-0 victory. Garrett Strenger drove in three of the runs, including a two-run double in the sixth. UMSL lost 7-2 in the middle game of the series. Rose drove in both Tritons runs with a two-run double in the third. UMSL enters the GLVC Tournament with a 27-22 record, including a 16-15 mark in conference play.
Men’s Tennis
The Tritons reached the semifinals of the GLVC Championship before falling to West No. 1 seed Rockhurst in a dual that came down to the final match Saturday at Sacred Heart Griffin High School in Springfield, Illinois. The Hawks took two of the three doubles matches to grab the lead in Saturday’s dual meet and also won the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches before UMSL rallied. Percy Siercke and Daniel Berdecio each pulled out three-set victories at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, and Henry Roberts leveled the dual with a 7-6 (5), 6-4 victory over Diego Schtulmann at No. 5. That left the No. 6 singles match to decide which team advanced to the championship. Joan Garros took the first set 6-2 but lost 6-4, 6-4 in the second and third as the Tritons’ season came to an end. Garros a day earlier booked UMSL’s spot in the semifinal with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 victory over Quincy’s Pablo Mateos Niella to cap a 4-2 win over the Hawks. The Tritons also got singles victories from Siercke and Roberts in Friday’s dual. With Saturday’s loss, UMSL finished its season with a 12-8 dual meet record.
Women’s Tennis
UMSL’s season ended with a 4-3 dual meet loss to Drury in the quarterfinals of the GLVC Championship on Friday at Sacred Heart Griffin High School in Springfield, Illinois. The Tritons dropped two of three doubles matches as Drury, the No. 2 seed in the west, claimed the doubles point. UMSL fought back with singles wins by Morgan Lint at No. 4, Giuliana Cunza at No. 5 and Aleksandra Lopez at No. 2. But after losing the No. 1 and No. 5 matches, the match was decided at No. 3 singles, where the Tritons’ Anna Favaron took the first set 6-3 against Antanina Novik but lost the next two 6-4, 6-2. UMSL finished with a dual meet record of 10-7.
