Volleyball
The University of Missouri–St. Louis volleyball team opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play over the weekend with a pair of road victories, topping Drury 25-13, 25-16, 25-15 on Friday in Springfield, Missouri, and cruising past Southwest Baptist 25-19, 25-13, 25-14 on Saturday in Bolivar, Missouri. Alayna Santel led the Tritons in kills in both matches, with 14 against the Panthers and 11 against the Bearcats. Iyannah Jackson and Hannah Copeland each added 10 kills in the win over over Southwest Baptist. UMSL’s defense was strong throughout the weekend, holding Drury to .051 hitting and Southwest Baptist to .106. Skylar Weaver totaled a team-best 30 digs in the two victories, and Caitlin Bishop finished with 70 assists. Coach Ryan Young‘s team will make its home debut on Friday when it plays host to Illinois Springfield at the Mark Twain Athletic Center. UMSL (9-4, 2-0 GLVC) will also play a home match against Quincy on Saturday afternoon.
Women’s Soccer
Freshman Ella Anselm accounted for three goals over the weekend to help the Tritons run their winning streak to four games with road victories against Missouri S&T and Lincoln. Anselm scored the lone goal in the 84th minute of Friday’s 1-0 win over the Miners in Rolla, Missouri. Aubree Wallace and Taylor Martin assisted on the goal. Rylee Griffith made three saves in the shutout victory. UMSL trailed Lincoln 1-0 at halftime on Sunday but exploded for four second-half goals in a 4-2 victory over the Blue Tigers in Jefferson City, Missouri. Rachel Skyberg tied the match at 1 with a goal in the 46th minute, and Anselm added goals in the 47th and 64th minutes. Skyberg and Gwen Maggard assisted on the first one. Lincoln pulled within a goal in the 71st minute, but Josie Maddox answered with just under six minutes remaining to complete the scoring. Griffith finished with two saves. The Tritons (5-2-1, 4-0-1 GLVC) will play their lone match of the week on Sunday against Maryville at the Don Dallas Soccer Field.
Men’s Soccer
UMSL went 0-1-1 in its weekend road trip, losing 2-0 against Missouri S&T on Friday in Rolla, Missouri, before salvaging a 1-1 tie with 10th-ranked Lincoln on Sunday in Jefferson City, Missouri. The Tritons fell behind 1-0 in the 11th minute against the Miners as Mike Banisik scored off an assist from Joseph Sommer. The score remained unchanged until the 77th minute when Joao Vieira scored to make it 2-0. UMSL outshot S&T 10-9 but couldn’t beat goalkeeper Cavitt Bruhn. UMSL goalie Jack Franklin made two saves in the loss. Franklin made three saves in Sunday’s draw. The Tritons scored first on a goal by Melo Mensah in the 31st minute, but the Blue Tigers pulled even on Nkouka Loubassou’s goal in the 60th minute. UMSL (1-2-4, 1-1-3 GLVC) will face Christian Brothers in a nonconference match on Friday at the Don Dallas Soccer Field before playing host to Maryville in a conference match on Sunday.
Women’s Golf
The 19th-ranked Tritons finished 12th out of 15 teams at least week’s Dallas Baptist University Classic beginning Monday at Oakmont Country Club in Corinth, Texas. UMSL posted a combined score of 601 in the tournament, which was shortened to 36 holes because of rain last Monday. Hillary Currier was the Tritons’ top finisher, coming in tied for 25th with a total of 147, one shot better than teammate Wilma Zanderau, who tied for 31st. Emmy Wahl and Mayan Covarrubias each posted scores of 153, and Hope Williams finished at 157. Dallas Baptist’s Madison Ude was the individual medalist with a score of 135, and she led the hosts to a 10-shot victory in the team competition with a score of 566. The University of Texas at Tyler was the runner-up with a total of 576. The Tritons will next compete in the Beall Fall Classic on Oct. 6-7 at the Findlay Country Club in Findlay, Ohio.
