Men’s Golf
The No. 22 University of Missouri–St. Louis men’s golf team finished second out of 16 teams at last week’s Midwest Collegiate, held Monday and Tuesday at Rock Hollow Golf Club in Peru, Indiana. The Tritons posted a combined score of 883 to finish one shot ahead of Rockhurst and Drury, which tied for third. UMSL was eight shots back of tournament winner Tiffin. The Tritons also fielded a second team, which finished 10th overall in the event. Benjamin Berger paced the Tritons with a score of 217 to tie for seventh. Logan Mayo was one shot back in ninth place. Campbell Cox and Trigg Lindahl tied for 18th with scores of 222, and Dani Solavera was one shot back in a tie for 22nd. Leo Baudry and Ludvig Granlund just missed cracking the top 25, finishing in a tie for 26th with scores of 225. Hillsdale’s Robert Thompson was the individual medalist with a total score of 210, one shot better than Tiffin’s Mitchell Brassard. UMSL is playing in this week’s National Preview at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nevada.
Volleyball
The Tritons remained unbeaten in Great Lakes Valley Conference play with victories over Illinois Springfield and Quincy at the Mark Twain Athletic Center. UMSL cruised by the Prairie Stars 25-7, 25-15, 25-19 on Friday evening in its first home match of the year, but the Tritons got a much tougher fight on Saturday against the Hawks. They dropped two of the first three sets but rallied for a 25-18, 25-27, 22-25, 25-19, 17-15 victory. Alayna Santel paced UMSL with 18 kills against Quincy after posting a team-high 13 in the win over Illinois Springfield. Freshman Bridget Cassady added 17 kills on Saturday, Iyannah Jackson had 15 kills and Caitlin Bishop finished with 66 assists. Skylar Weaver had 28 digs. The Tritons (11-4, 4-0 GLVC) will visit Upper Iowa on Friday and Truman State on Saturday.
Women’s Soccer
UMSL ran its unbeaten streak to six matches after playing No. 16 Maryville to a 1-1 draw on Sunday at Lonnie Folks Field. The Saints jumped head early with Allison Estanich scoring in the third minute, but the Tritons regrouped, holding the home team scoreless the rest of the match and pulling even on Gwen Maggard‘s penalty kick in the 63rd minute. UMSL outshot Maryville 14-7, including 4-2 in shots on goal. Tritons goalkeeper Rylee Griffith made one save. UMSL (5-2-2, 4-0-2 GLVC) has home matches against McKendree on Friday and Illinois Springfield on Sunday.
Men’s Soccer
The Tritons went 1-1 last week, topping Christian Brothers 2-1 in a nonconference match at the Don Dallas Soccer Field but losing 5-1 against Maryville at Lonnie Folks Field. Colton Milosch and Melo Mensah each scored for UMSL in Friday afternoon’s victory. The Buccaneers cut into the Tritons’ lead when Olivier van der Tuin scored in the 62nd minute, but goalkeeper Will Winkler and the UMSL defense held on. Winkler, making his first collegiate start, made two saves to collect the victory. Maryville proved a much tougher test on Sunday. The Saints scored three times in the first 29 minutes to put the Tritons in a deep hole. Max Matarelli scored UMSL’s lone goal in the 57th minute with an assist from Pablo Nodar, but Maryville responded with a pair of goals 19 seconds apart in the 64th minute. The Tritons (2-3-4, 1-2-3 GLVC) will look to bounce back with home matches against McKendree on Friday and Illinois Springfield on Sunday.
Men’s and Women’s Swimming
UMSL’s swimming teams opened their season with a dual meet against NCAA Division I Saint Louis University last Thursday at the Simon Rec Center. Both the men’s and women’s teams lost their head-to-head competitions with the men falling 155-58 and the women losing 154-64, but there were a few standout individual performances. All-American Justice Beard won both the 1,000-yard and 200-yard free style races. She posted a time of 10 minutes, 30.28 seconds in the 1,000 to finish ahead of teammate Libby Smith by nearly 28 seconds. Beard’s time of 1:54.42 in the 200 was nearly four seconds faster than SLU’s Meghan Eng. On the men’s side, Mikael Larsson won the 1,000 free in 9:59.33 and finished second in the 500 free with a time of 4:44.56. Kaleb Suitor and Lathan Parks claimed the top two spots in the 100-yard butterfly. Suitor hit the wall first at 51.09 followed by Parks at 51.79. UMSL will next race on Oct. 25 hosting William Jewell in the home opener at the UMSL Swimming Pool.
