Women’s Golf
University of Missouri–St. Louis sophomore Wilma Zanderau will compete in the NCAA Division II Women’s Golf Championship after placing seventh individually and claiming one of two at-large berths at the NCAA East Regional last week at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana. The Tritons narrowly missed sending their entire team to the NCAA Championship May 21-25 on the Panther Lake Course at Orange County National Golf Center in Winter Garden, Florida. They finished sixth out of 15 universities in the team competition with the top five qualifying for the national tournament. UMSL posted a combined 54-hole score of 947, led by Zanderau’s total of 226, including a final round of 74. Juliette Lecomte was the Tritons’ next highest finisher, tying for 41st with a score of 240. Ebba Wernered was one shot back in a tie for 44th. Victoria Klausner tied for 51st with a score of 246, and Momo Kikuchi tied for 58th with a total of 249. Grand Valley State’s Olivia Stoll took medalist honors with a score of 223, edging Findlay’s Mary Kelly Mulcahy by one stroke. Findlay beat Indianapolis in a playoff to cliam the team title after both posted totals of 905. Grand Valley State, Ashland and Davenport also advanced from the East Regional to the national tournament.
Men’s Golf
The Tritons’ season came to an end after they finished 13th out of 20 teams at the NCAA Midwest/Central Regional on Saturday at KickingBird Golf Club in Edmond, Oklahoma. The Tritons posted a combined score of 850 in the tournament but were 16 shots behind the fifth and final NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championship qualifier Ferris State in the team competition. Leo Baudry was UMSL’s top finisher, tying for 19th with a 54-hole total of 208. Cyril Henault, fresh off earning medalist honors at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship, tied for 23rd with a total of 209. Ben McPherson finished in a tie for 49th after posting a score of 214, and Zach Unnerstall tied for 80th with a total of 219. Henderson State’s Alex Hadden was the medalist with a total of 200, and he beat Central Oklahoma’s Bennett Baldwin by one stroke. Central Oklahoma won the team title by finishing one stroke ahead of Henderson State. Harding and Grand Valley State also clinched spots in the NCAA Championship. Rogers State’s Elliot Han Monteremal and Missouri Southern’s Luis Limon were the top two individuals not with an advancing team to earn a berth to the national tournament, to be played May 21-25 at the Orange County National Golf Center.
Baseball
UMSL’s turnaround season came to an end last week as the Tritons dropped two games in the GLVC Tournament at Mtn. Dew Park in Marion, Illinois. UMSL, seeded fifth as it made its first appearance in the tournament since 2014, battled fourth-seeded Quincy into extra innings in Wednesday’s opening game before losing 5-4 in the 10th. The Hawks’ Dustin Dupont hit a game-winning home run to right field in the 10th inning to send the Tritons into an elimination game Thursday against Lewis. Quincy had previously rallied for two runs in the eighth inning to level the game at 4. Jake Isaacs, Barrett Rose, Bryce Kulinski and Garrett Strenger combined for eight of UMSL’s nine hits in the game, and Isaacs, Rose and Strenger each had an RBI. Thomas Fox hit a three-run double in the second inning to give Lewis an early lead in Thursday’s elimination game, and the Flyers went on to pull out a 5-2 victory. The Tritons managed only six hits in the game. Zach Beatty hit a solo home run in the fifth inning, and Andrew Buescher drove in UMSL’s only other run with a groundout in the same frame. The Tritons (30-22) still had plenty of success to build on in Coach Scott Eul’s second season. They posted their first winning season since going 29-21 in 2016, and their 30 wins were the most since the program finished 32-21 in 2012.
