Men’s and Women’s Swimming
The University of Missouri–St. Louis men’s swimming team split a triangular meet with Maryville and Missouri S&T, beating the Saints 171-18 but falling to the Miners 104-101, while the women cruised to a win over Maryville 137-36 in a dual on Friday afternoon at the UMSL Swimming Pool. The men won four events in the three-team competition. Aaron Wicklund won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10 minutes, 8.44 seconds. Carson Ring won the 500 freestyle in 4:56.53 after finishing as the runner up to Wicklund in the 1,000. David Reynolds won the 50 freestyle in 21.28 seconds, and he was also part of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay with Joan Cortadellas Llubera, Metehan Saruhan and Lathan Parks in a time of 3:08.48. UMSL’s women won eight of the 10 contested events against Maryville with Macy Ganshert, Audrey Lantz, Romina Itzkovich, Kate Nelson, Justice Beard and Cheyanne Godleski each winning individually and the Tritons sweeping the 400 medley and 400 freestyle relays. Ganshert won the 200 freestyle in in 2:04.03, Lantz won the 50 free in 25.44, Itzkovich took first in the 200 individual medley in 2:13.54, Nelson won the 100 butterfly in 1:01.22, Beard claimed the top spot in the 100 freestyle and Godleski won the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.95. Lantz also contributed to both relay victories with help from Nelson, Itzkovich and sister Ella Lantz in the 400 freestyle relay. The Tritons are idle until Jan. 17 when they will take on Washington University at the Millstone Pool in St. Louis.
Women’s Basketball
The Tritons rolled to a 58-28 victory over Puerto Rico-Mayaguez Sunday in the opening game of the Puerto Rico Classic at Roger Mendoza Coliseum in Caguas, Puerto Rico. Alex Wolff scored six of her team-high 10 points during a 12-2 opening run, and UMSL never looked back, stretching its advantage to 17-6 at the end of the first quarter and 31-11 by halftime. Puerto Rico-Mayaquez never got closer than 15 points after the break. Ten Tritons scored points with Kate Rolfes chipping in nine points, and Katie Hamill scoring seven. UMSL’s defense limited the Tarzans to 24% shooting and forced 17 turnovers while picking up eight steals. The Tritons (8-2) will play their final game in Puerto Rico on Monday afternoon against Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico at the Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum in Bayamon.
