The University of Missouri–St. Louis women’s soccer team will look to continue making steady improvement under third-year head coach Bobby Lessentine when the UMSL Tritons take to the field for the first time this season tomorrow (Sept. 2).
UMSL is looking to build on a 7-7-2 record during the 2010 campaign, which included a 5-7-2 mark in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Lessentine returns 11 letterwinners and seven starters from that team, including the top four scorers. Among the returnees is senior Kaylee Neutzling, a first team all-GLVC and all-region selection a year ago. In her junior campaign, Neutzling tallied 10 goals and three assists for 23 points.
Senior Kelly Muesenfechter also returns. The squad’s number two scorer last season, she finished with six goals and six assists.
Also back are seniors Jesa Jenkins and Bridget Belli, numbers three and four in scoring, respectively a year ago. Jenkins finished with five goals and four assists, while Belli knocked in four goals.
Two other returning starters include senior Samantha Faron and junior Courtney Blake. Both cover the midfield and back. Faron finished with three assists and one goal last year, while Blake tallied one goal and one assist.
Senior Hanna Sayre also returns as the goalie where she started 11 contests, recording 45 saves.
The Tritons also return sophomore Christine Lips, who appeared in nine games in goal, posting two shutouts and a 4-2 record, and senior back Lindsay Krull, who started eight of 16 games played in.
UMSL welcomes the addition of 10 new players including sophomore midfield/back Kelly Goehring and sophomore goalkeeper Kaitlyn Smugala, both transfers from Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau and sophomore midfield/back Brittany Harbaugh, a transfer from Louisiana Tech University in Ruston.
The Tritons begin their 30th season of intercollegiate play with a road contest at Missouri Southern State in Joplin, Mo., tomorrow. UMSL will then open the home portion of its schedule at noon Sunday (Sept. 4) against Lindenwood University (St. Charles, Mo.).
