People Magazine recently shared the story of Luke Pellegrino, a second-year optometry student, who is training guide dogs for patients with vision loss. Pellegrino is working with Dogs Inc, an organization that relies on volunteers to raise puppies to become future guide dogs. “When I started optometry school, I already knew I wanted to go into low vision, which is a very small subset of optometry,” Pellegrino said. “After I got through my first semester of optometry school at UMSL, I decided I would raise a guide dog. School is stressful and dogs can also make that much better too.”
KSDK aired a package on the success of the Tritons baseball team. Last month, the team celebrated its first Great Lakes Valley Conference title since 2003. Sports Director Frank Cusumano stopped by practice as the team prepared to take on Wayne State in the opening game of the NCAA Division II Tournament. The Tritons bested Wayne State in the Midwest Regional, winning the team’s first NCAA Tournament game since 1996. But that proved to be the last win for the sixth-seeded Tritons, who then lost 11-1 against second-seeded Illinois Springfield and saw their season come to an end with a 14-11 loss in 10 innings against seventh-seeded Indianapolis on Saturday.
The St. Louis Business Journal featured news of Ameren’s $1 million investment in UMSL’s School of Engineering. The funding will support construction of the Ameren Electrical Engineering Lab, currently being built in the UMSL Science Complex, along with additional funding for scholarships and programming to provide experiential learning opportunities for engineering students. The outlet also shared the announcement of UMSL’s new Leadership Institute, which will serve as a regional center for leadership development, social impact and executive education. The institute will help prepare both emerging and established leaders to drive organizational performance and community impact through evidence-based leadership instruction.
