Men’s Soccer
University of Missouri–St. Louis men’s soccer player Brady Freeman scored a pair of goals, the first coming on a bicycle kick from the top of the box, as the Tritons knocked off Truman State 2-1 on Saturday night to complete an unbeaten week in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. Freeman’s bicycle kick goal came in the 73rd minute at the Don Dallas Soccer Field and snapped a scoreless tie. The junior forward added another goal – his seventh of the season – about 10 minutes later to put UMSL ahead 2-0, and the Tritons held on despite surrendering a penalty kick goal to the Bulldogs’ Jacob Panagos in the 87th minute. Goalkeeper Will Winkler made a pair of saves to collect the victory. On Wednesday, Winkler made one save as UMSL played Quincy to a scoreless draw. The Tritons finished the match with an 11-8 advantage in shots. UMSL (4-4-2, 3-3-2 GLVC) got its season record back to .500 and will hit the road to take on Lincoln on Wednesday in Jefferson City before returning home to face Rockhurst on Saturday.
Women’s Soccer
The Tritons moved into first place in the GLVC standings after shutting out Quincy 3-0 on Wednesday and following it up with a 4-0 win over Truman State on Saturday at the Don Dallas Soccer Field. UMSL has now won five straight games and is 7-0-1 in conference play. Taylor Martin and Ella Anselm each had two goals on the week, and the Tritons also got tallies from Avery Hesseldenz, Maddy Kuhn and Rachel Skyberg. Hesseldenz scored the game-winner against the Hawks, snapping a scoreless tie in the 47th minute. Kuhn and Martin each added goals in the second half, and UMSL cruised while outshooting Quincy 22-5. The Tritons were even more dominant against the Bulldogs, scoring three times in the first 16 minutes. Skyberg got things going with a goal 2:40 into the first half. Anselm added the first of her two goals off a pass from Skyberg at the 5:21 mark, and Martin added her second goal of the week off a corner kick from Maddie Clark at 15:58. Anselm’s second goal gave UMSL a 4-0 lead with just over 20 minutes remaining. The Tritons outshot Truman State 27-3. Goalkeeper Allysa Wolf made three saves in the two victories to keep UMSL unbeaten in its past 10 matches. The Tritons (8-1-2, 7-0-1 GLVC) will travel to Lincoln on Wednesday before returning home to face Rockhurst on Saturday.
Volleyball
UMSL ran its winning streak to nine matches after beating Truman State on Friday and Upper Iowa on Saturday at the Mark Twain Athletic Center. The Tritons topped the Bulldogs 25-22, 19-25, 25-19, 25-21 as Maggie Johnson and Bridget Cassady each registered 18 kills. Alayna Santel added 15 as setter Marly Burbach directed a multiheaded attack with 57 assists. UMSL also played strong defense throughout, holding Truman State to a .172 hitting percentage. Skylar Weaver had 26 digs, and Mady Gant finished with a season-high nine blocks. The Tritons swept the Peacocks 25-16, 25-21, 33-31 despite a spirited effort in the the final game, which saw 14 ties and five lead changes. Johnson had a team-high 17 kills, Santel 16 and Cassady 14. Gant managed five blocks. UMSL (11-5, 6-0 GLVC) will play host to Maryville on Friday before traveling to Rolla, Missouri, to face Missouri S&T on Saturday.
Men’s Golf
UMSL finished third in an 18-team field at the Midwest Collegiate, which wrapped up last Tuesday at Rock Hollow Golf Club in Peru, Indiana. The Tritons posted a combined score of 866. Trigg Lindahl led the way with a 54-hole total of 214, including a final-round 70 that helped him finish in a tie for fourth. Benjamin Berger tied for eighth with a score of even-par 216. Logan Mayo and Dani Solavera also finished among the top 30 individuals, tying for 29th with totals of 221. UMSL also fielded a second team in the tournament. Led by Ludvig Granlund, that team posted a combined score of 901 to finish 13th. Granlund placed 12th with a total of 217. Grand Valley State’s Nicolas Vincent was the individual medalist, beating Findlay’s Cahle Roth on the second playoff hole after both finished regulation with totals of 206. Findlay won the team title by one stroke over Grand Valley State with a score of 862. UMSL is competing in the Flyers Fall Intercollegiate, hosted by Lewis, today and Tuesday at Cog Hill Golf and Country Club in Lemont, Illinois.
Women’s Golf
Mayan Covarrubias led the Tritons to a tie for fourth in a 12-team field at the Powercat Classic at Colbert Hills Golf Club in Manhattan, Kansas. Covarrubias tied for fourth individually with a combined scored of 218 and helped UMSL post a combined score of 901 in the 54-hole tournament. She was named to the all-tournament team and went on to be named the GLVC Player of the Week in women’s golf. Sarah Cuney shot a final-round 77 to post a score of 227, tied for 25th. Alaina Ervin was one shot back in a tie for 33rd. Kansas State’s Jiarui Chen was the individual medalist with a score of 201 and led the host Wildcats to the team title with a total of 864, 17 shots better than runner-up Cincinnati. The Tritons are competing at the Beall Fall Invitational today and Tuesday at Findlay Country Club in Findlay, Ohio.
Men’s and Women’s Cross Country
Julio Cruz Jr. raced to an 11th-place finish out of nearly 180 runners Saturday in the Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival at Agri Park in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The UMSL senior posted a season-best time of 26 minutes, 36.20 seconds in the 8-kilometer race. He helped the Tritons’ men’s team finish in 14th place out of 21 teams. Armando Montoya also cracked the top 50 individuals, finishing 47th with a time of 27:54.1. UMSL had four runners compete in the 5-kilometer women’s race. Elektra Alcantar was the top finisher with a time of 21:34.8. UMSL will next run in the Bradley Pink Classic on Oct. 16 at Newman Golf Course in Peoria, Illinois.
Men’s and Women’s Swimming
The Tritons opened their season competing against McKendree, Saint Louis University and Washington University in the STL Showcase on Saturday at the Chuck Fruit Aquatic Center in Edwardsville, Illinois. UMSL posted top-five finishes in nine events. On the women’s side, returning All-American Justice Beard swam to a fourth-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1 minute, 0.24 seconds. Uxue Ortiz de Pinedo and Lena Olender finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 100-yard breaststroke with Ortiz de Pinedo posting a time of 1:07.69. Beard, Danaka Tucker, Olender and Audrey Lantz finished fourth in the 850-yard freestyle relay while Ella Lantz, Ortiz Pinedo, Audrey Lantz and Olender were fifth in the 200-yard medley relay. Gabriel Mosto had the top individual finish on the men’s side, finishing fourth in the 100-yard backstroke in 51.83 seconds. The men’s 850-yard freestyle relay team of Mikael Larsson, Mattia Nardi, Stellio Hasapis and Lathan Parks finished fourth in a time of 7:48.16. The Tritons also finished fourth in the 200-yard medley relay as Henrique Silva, Landon Hanesworth, Parks and Hasapis posted a time of 1:35.13. UMSL placed fourth in a mixed 200-yard freestyle relay with Hasapis, Parks, Audrey Lantz and Olender posting a time of 1:31.36. The Tritons will next race on Oct. 16 when they face Rockhurst at St. Louis Community College.
