“Exposure 12” will feature photography paintings by St. Louis-area artists Jamie Adams, Kit Keith and Bill Kreplin.

These artists blend mid-20th century popular culture with contemporary content and personal histories to construct their narratives. Whereas traditional narrative painting draws on mythological traditions, literary materials or historical events to illustrate a particular story, the artists look to pop art, mass media, found imagery and Hollywood to construct their works.

Unlike religious or historical paintings that are specific stories, the narratives of the paintings by Adams, Keith and Kreplin are implicitly unresolved offering each viewer the opportunity to bring to the works their own unique experiences and to construct their own narrative and meanings.

The “Exposure” series is a long-running program created by the St. Louis Gallery Association, and previously presented in the Hunt Gallery at Webster University in Webster Groves, Mo. The University of Missouri-St. Louis’ Gallery 210 now runs the program, and “Exposure 12” will be the sixth exhibition in the series housed at the gallery.

The curatorial process for “Exposure” has taken many forms over the years, from invitational to competition. But the overall goal remains the same, which is to present new and challenging work by local artists, said Gallery 210 Director Terry Suhre.
