Steven Cash, a sophomore majoring in business administration at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, is a world-class athlete. The Overland, Mo., resident on Saturday won a gold medal as the goalie for the Team USA sled ice hockey team at the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver, B.C.

The gold medal win came via a 2-0 victory over the team from Japan. It is the latest in a list of accomplishments for Cash, who had his right leg amputated below the knee when he was three years old. Since joining Team USA in 2005, he has won two gold medals, in 2009 at the Sled Hockey World Championships in Ostrava, Czech Republic, and in January at the Japan Para Ice Sledge Hockey Championships in Nagano City. He also has two bronze medals, from the 2008 IPC Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships in Marlborough, Mass., and from the 2006 Paralympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy. Individually, he was named to the All-star team at the 2009 World Championships, and in January was named the 2009 Paralympic SportsMan of the Year.

“Steve Cash is the best goaltender in the world, and he proved that this week,” said Team USA coach Ray Maluta. “His play gives the rest of the team so much confidence. We’re excited to watch Steve continue to develop.” In Vancouver, Cash did not allow a single goal in any of the five games the team played, including while facing a penalty shot in the gold medal game.
