The German Culture Center, Center for International Studies and Public Policy Research Center at University of Missouri–St. Louis will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the St. Louis/Stuttgart Sister Cities Program April 16 with a lecture and photography exhibit based on the German city.
Wolfgang Schuster, who has been the lord mayor of Stuttgart since 1997, is an expert in urban planning. He will present his lecture, “Cities and Global Challenges,” at 3 p.m. in the McDonnell Conference Room, 331 Social Sciences and Business building at UMSL.
Following the lecture, Schuster will be honored at a reception marking the official opening of a photo exhibition, “Stuttgart – Gesichter einer Stadt (“Faces of a City”),” in the PPRC’s Photo Gallery in room 361 SSB. The photographs were first exhibited at the Stuttgart City Hall in April 2009. They were created by members of the Fotoclub Stuttgart.
The 50th anniversary highlights the strong partnership that has benefited both cities. Representatives from St. Louis and Stuttgart met on March 10, 1960 to sign official documents uniting the cities in a sister city relationship and committing each to ongoing activities, which encourage people-to-people and government-to-government interaction. The affiliation was formed under the guidelines of Sister Cities International, Inc., an organization founded by former U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower to promote world peace through mutual understanding. St. Louis-Stuttgart Sister Cites, Inc., a non-profit organization of volunteers, was founded to manage the activities that achieve the goals set forth in the partnership agreement for more information.
