MEN’S BASKETBALL
UMSL went 1-1 last week, picking up a thrilling 58-56 victory over Quincy (Ill.) University on Thursday on Pack the Stands night as senior Troy Long’s baseline jumper with 0.3 seconds on the clock gave the Tritons the victory and a share of the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division title. UMSL then missed a chance at the outright title by one point in a 70-69 loss at the University of Illinois Springfield on Saturday. The Tritons now stand at 17-8 overall, including 12-5 in the GLVC.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The UMSL women’s basketball team bounced back from an 80-57 loss to Quincy University last Thursday to post a 74-64 victory at the University of Illinois Springfield and clinched its bid to the GLVC Tournament with the win. Senior Caitlyn Moody scored 17 points in her hometown of Springfield, Ill., while junior Devonna Smith posted her seventh double-double of the year with 16 points and 15 rebounds. UMSL is now 10-15 overall, including 5-12 in the GLVC.
SOFTBALL
The UMSL softball team opened its 2012 campaign with a 1-3 record last weekend at the Charger Chillout Tournament in Alabama. The Tritons began the season with an eight-inning 4-3 victory over Augusta (Ga.) State University before falling to Truman State University (Kirksville, Mo.) (10-5), Georgia College and State University (Milledgeville) (9-1) and No. 3 ranked North Georgia College and State University (Dahlonega) (11-2). Freshman Brianna Butler had five hits and five RBIs to pace the offense, including a three-run home run in her first collegiate game.
