Alexei Demchenko, professor of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, has been named a University of Missouri Curators’ Professor.
“I am very pleased that my efforts have been recognized so highly by my peers, administrators and curators,” said Demchenko. “The title is a great honor and recognition to the entire Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and its outstanding faculty, staff and students. It would not have happened without all of their support.”
Demchenko is one of two UMSL faculty members to receive the title this year. It is awarded to faculty members who have demonstrated outstanding scholarship and well-established reputations.
Demchenko, who joined UMSL in 2001, has developed an extremely productive and world renowned program in carbohydrate chemistry. His breakthrough work has been recognized by the American Chemical Society Carbohydrate Division, who gave him the 2007 New Investigator Award.
In addition, Demchenko has established himself as one of the university’s most prolific grant and publication writers. To date, he has brought more than $3 million in grant funding to campus from agencies such as the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.
Demchenko has 130 publications including peer reviewed articles in top journals and book chapters. Recently, he was invited to serve as the subject editor on natural products and chemical biology for Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information, products and services.
Recipients of the Curators’ Professor title are nominated by their departments and approved by the Curators of the University of Missouri System.
Demchenko, whose new title takes effect in September, will be one of 12 professors at UMSL who are Curators’ Professors.
