A family snapshot taken in Paris won the top prize in the ninth annual International Photo Contest sponsored by International Studies and Programs at the University of Missouri–St. Louis.

Johanna Frost, a freshman majoring in business administration with an emphasis in international business, took the winning photo outside of the Louvre Museum in Paris. The photo, titled “Facing the Sun,” shows Frost’s mother looking at the Louvre Pyramid with the sun casting her shadow on the ground.
“It is a great feeling,” said Frost on learning of her first place win. “I am not a photographer and have not won anything like a photo contest before so of course it is a lot of fun!”
Second place went to Kevin Hill, a senior majoring in accounting, for his photograph “Blue Boats,” which he took in Venice, Italy. He was exploring St. Mark’s Square when the gondolas caught his eye.
“I saw the gondolas, all docked in a line,” he said. “The ornamental design on the boats, the bright blue coverings and the alignment of the boats side-by-side all contributed to a very symmetrical picture that caught my attention. I thought it looked cool.”
The third place prize went to Rachelle Brandel, a senior majoring in modern language with an emphasis in Japanese and English. Her entry, “Past Meets Present,” was taken in Kyoto, Japan.
There were 79 photos entered by nearly 30 individuals.
Students, faculty and staff were encouraged to send in their photos from around the world for the photo contest, but only students could place in the top three. They received $200, $150 and $100, respectively, in scholarship money.
The three winning entries and 19 honorable mentions will be displayed at Gallery Visio at UMSL through May 15 with an opening reception 4-7 p.m. April 24. The event and exhibit is free and open to the public.
Gallery Visio is a student-run art space in 170 Millennium Student Center on UMSL’s North Campus. Regular hours are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
