Faculty recipients of the 2014 Chancellor's Awards for Excellence

Following the annual State of the University Address by University of Missouri–St. Louis Chancellor Tom George on Sept. 17, six faculty members were recognized for their outstanding work, along with three UMSL staff members.

The Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence, established in 1988 by Chancellor Marguerite Ross Barnett, have become a university tradition. This year’s faculty awards went to:

Xuemin “Sam” Wang, the E. Desmond Lee Endowed Professor in Plant Science, for research and creativity
Jennifer Reynolds-Moehrle, associate professor of accounting, for teaching
Susan Feigenbaum, professor of economics, for service
Deborah Maltby, associate teaching professor of English, for a non-tenure track faculty member
Gary Flotron, senior lecturer of finance and legal studies, for a part-time faculty member

The celebration also included the Gerald and Deanne Gitner Excellence in Teaching Award, given each year to a UMSL faculty member who is in the early stages of his or her career and demonstrates outstanding and innovative teaching abilities. Shane Seely, assistant professor of English, received this year’s Gitner award.

Twenty-five-year service awards were presented to the following faculty members:

Jennifer MacKenzie, teaching professor, English
Jim O’Brien, professor, chemistry
Prabhakar Rao, professor, math and computer science
Nigam Rath, research professor, chemistry and biochemistry, Center for Nanoscience
Steve Schreiner, associate professor, English
Margaret Sherraden, professor, social work
Christopher Spilling, professor and chair, chemistry
Ann Winkler, professor, economics and public policy administration
