Women’s Basketball
The University of Missouri–St. Louis opened the 2014-15 season in Puerto Rico last weekend, where it went 1-1. After falling to UPR- Bayamon, 76-68, in the season opener, the UMSL Tritons bounced back to defeat UPR-Rio Piedras, 67-30. Senior Alexis Lawrence led UMSL with 21 points in Friday’s loss, while sophomore Hayley Alexander followed with 10 points. On Saturday, junior Kelly Kunkel scored a career-high 18 points and added seven rebounds and four assists to lead the way to a Tritons victory. The Tritons (1-1) return home to host the UMSL Classic Friday and Saturday. UMSL will face Lincoln on Friday and Minnesota State on Saturday, while Maryville will also compete.
Men’s Basketball
UMSL is off to a 2-0 start as the Tritons defeated Grand Valley State (58-53) and Ferris State in the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge to open the season last weekend. The Tritons overcame a 20-point deficit to defeat Grand Valley State with senior Aareon Smith scoring 13 of his 17 points in the final half. Senior Neil Branham drained the game-winner with seven seconds to play against Ferris State and finished with eight points, while Smith was the game’s leading scorer with 19 points. The Tritons (2-0) return home to host Robert Morris-Springfield on Saturday in the start of a four-game homestand.
Volleyball
UMSL saw its season come to a close with a 3-0 loss to Indianapolis on Friday in the quarterfinal round action of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament. Sophomore Jory Siebenmoregen led the Tritons with nine kills, while senior Haley Brightwell tallied eight. UMSL completes the 2014 season with a 16-12 record.
Swimming
The UMSL swim teams competed in a triangular with William Jewell and Lindenwood last Saturday. Fernando Robledo placed third in the 50-meter and 100-meter SC freestyle races to highlight the Tritons.
