Students in Lee Slocum‘s senior seminar class are helping to make city officials aware of citizens’ views and concerns.
Slocum, associate professor of criminology and criminal justice at UMSL, and 20 of her students have created a survey for the residents of University City, Mo. The survey will help officials gain feedback on everything from policing to city infrastructure.
To date, about 350 surveys have been returned. Slocum said in general, people are pretty satisfied with the police and are willing to report crimes, but they are not aware of many of the services that UCPD offer.
“Unfortunately, we have had a difficult time surveying youth, who might hold different views of the police,” she said.
The class is continuing to collect surveys and analyzing data.
KTVI (Channel 2) recently featured Slocum in a story about the survey.
