Senior defender Kelly McGovern of the University of Missouri–St. Louis women’s soccer team has been named to the 2015 Division II Academic All-District Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), recognizing the nation’s top student-athletes for their performance in the classroom and on the field.
McGovern owns a 3.89 grade point average in cross categorical special education. On the field, she is part of a defense that has posted eight shutouts and a goals against average of 0.592, which ranks 22nd nationally and second in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Playing soccer for the first time since high school after four years of collegiate basketball, McGovern has helped UMSL to a 10-3-4 record, which included an 8-3-4 GLVC mark. During the season, the Tritons owned a win streak of eight games and an unbeaten streak of 12 games. UMSL is the No. 4 seed in the GLVC Tournament and will open play at home on Sunday at 1 p.m., hosting No. 5 seed Drury in one of four quarterfinal round games.
To be eligible for nomination to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore in academic standing with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average and must be a starter or an important reserve.
McGovern is now eligible to be selected to the Academic All-America Team.
