Women’s Basketball
UMSL suffered a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference road losses last weekend in the western part of the state. The Tritons fell 78-71 at Rockhurst on Thursday before dropping a 64-41 decision at William Jewell on Saturday. Junior Jordan Fletcher averaged 15 points and 6.5 rebounds in the two games, which included a 22-point, 12-rebound effort at Rockhurst. Sophomore Laura Szorenyi followed with 13.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game, including 16 points at William Jewell. UMSL (9-10, 4-7 GLVC) will wrap up the road portion of its schedule this weekend, traveling to Illinois Springfield on Thursday and McKendree on Saturday.
Men’s Basketball
UMSL lost at Rockhurst 77-68 last Thursday before suffering a 69-68 setback at William Jewell on Saturday as the Cardinals made the second of two free throws with 7.8 seconds to play. Junior Elijah Watson averaged 16.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game, including a season-high 27 points in the one-point loss. UMSL (9-12, 3-8 GLVC) plays its final two road games of the regular season this weekend when it travels to Illinois Springfield on Thursday and to McKendree on Saturday.
Men’s and Women’s Swimming
Freshman Mike Trefler recorded a pair of first-place finishes last Saturday as the swimming teams closed out the regular season in a tri-meet at Saint Louis University against the NCAA Division I Billikens and Maryville. Trefler won the 100-yard breaststroke and swam the second leg on the winning 200-yard freestyle relay. UMSL defeated Maryville, 108-23, but lost to the Billikens, 117-58. On the women’s side, freshman Merel Visser swam to a school record in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Visser placed second in that event and also helped her team to a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The Tritons defeated the crosstown Saints, 101-76, but SLU topped UMSL, 142-49. UMSL returns to the pool Feb. 9-11 for the GLVC Championships in Crawfordsville, Indiana.
