Softball
The 17th-ranked Tritons opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play by splitting a pair of doubleheaders last weekend. UMSL took Game 1 from Illinois Springfield 4-3 in 10 innings on Saturday before dropping the second game 6-1. It picked up a 4-1 win over McKendree in the nightcap on Sunday after losing the opener 2-1. Sophomore Serena Olson had four hits, three of which were home runs, while sophomore Carly Kingery went 2-1 in the circle. The Tritons (20-8, 2-2 GLVC) are on the road the next two weekends, beginning with a trip north to Lewis and Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
Baseball
UMSL posted a 2-1 record last week. The Tritons picked up an 11-7 victory at Illinois Springfield on Thursday before splitting with Bellarmine over the weekend. After falling 9-3 on Saturday, they bounced back for a 14-6 win on Sunday. Senior Nick Ulrey recorded six hits, including two doubles and a home run, and added four RBIs. Senior Jacob Renfrow earned the win at UIS, allowing two runs on five hits in seven innings. Senior Kevin Smith got the win Sunday, surrendering just one run on seven hits in six innings with eight strikeouts. UMSL (6-8) travels to Southern Indiana on Wednesday before hosting Maryville in a four-game series Saturday and Sunday to open GLVC play.
Women’s Tennis
UMSL swept its two opponents last weekend, posting 9-0 wins at Illinois Springfield and Southern Indiana. In doubles, graduate students Kristine Lindal and Carlota Trevino won their 10th straight match, while in singles, junior Patricia Maya and freshman Marina Prediger won their 10th and ninth straight, respectively. UMSL (7-0) will host Southwest Baptist on Thursday before traveling across town to Maryville on Saturday for its GLVC opener.
Men’s Tennis
The 43rd-ranked Tritons earned a 6-3 road win at Illinois Springfield on Saturday. The Tritons took two of three doubles and four of six singles matches. Freshman Ben Kasprzak went 2-0 on the day, winning at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles, while at No. 3 doubles, senior Dario Vidaurre and freshman Milan Kovacs picked up their fourth straight win. UMSL (4-1) returns to the courts on Thursday, hosting Southwest Baptist.
Women’s Golf
UMSL won its fourth team title of the season, winning last week’s Buccaneer Spring Classic hosted by Christian Brothers. The Tritons turned in a combined score of 638 (319-319), winning the event by 37 strokes. Junior Alexa Capesius claimed medalist honors for the first time in her career with her score of 159 (77-82). UMSL will be back on the course Saturday and Sunday at the Perry Park Invitational, hosted by Lewis, in Perry Park, Kentucky.
