UMSL Tritons weekly rewind

The women's golf team picked up its fifth team win of the season on Monday, winning its own Triton Invitational, held at the Norwood Hills Country Club.

Junior Ares Boira helped the UMSL women’s golf team dominate the competition in the Triton Invitational Sunday and Monday at Norwood Hills Country Club. Boira finished with a combined score of 154, good for a third-place finish individually. Teammate Maxi Roth took medalist honors for the first time in her college career, finishing with a combined score of 145, good for a seven-shot win.

Softball
UMSL was 4-2 last week with splits against Maryville and Truman State and a sweep at Quincy. Senior Alex Stupek batted .500 to lead the offense with nine hits, including two home runs and three doubles for a slugging percentage of 1.000. She also finished with seven RBIs and scored six runs. Sophomore Carly Kingery was 3-0 in the circle with a save. She posted an ERA of 1.44 and recorded 29 strikeouts. UMSL (28-12, 10-6 GLVC) will host Missouri S&T on Friday and Drury on Saturday.

Baseball
The Tritons dropped three of four games at Quincy last weekend in a Great Lakes Valley Conference series. Junior Cooper Vinz tallied seven hits and scored six runs, while sophomore Tom DeCero finished with six hits and five RBIs. Junior Cole McDonald’s pinch hit grand slam in Saturday’s second game helped UMSL to a 4-3 win. The Tritons (10-18, 4-8 GLVC) are home on Tuesday, hosting Southern Indiana in nonconference play. They will travel to Rockhurst on Friday and Saturday for a four-game GLVC series.

Women’s Tennis
UMSL suffered its first loss of the season last Friday with a 5-4 defeat at 14th-ranked Drury. Sophomore Salome Bleuler and junior Patricia Maya won at No. 2 doubles to extend their win streak to 10. In singles, graduate student Carlota Trevino won at No. 4 for her 11th straight victory and freshman Marina Prediger collected her 14th straight win at No. 6. The Tritons (11-1, 3-1 GLVC) will wrap up the regular season at Rockhurst and William Jewell on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Men’s Tennis
The Tritons lost their first GLVC match, falling at No. 17 Drury 8-1, last Friday. Freshman Ben-Hur Kasprzak scored his team’s lone Tritons point with a 7-6, 6-3 upset victory over 15th-ranked Maximilian Hepp at No. 1 singles. UMSL (6-3, 2-1 GLVC) closes out league play this weekend with matches at Rockhurst and William Jewell on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Women’s Golf
UMSL cruised to its fifth victory of the season, finishing 43 shots ahead of its closer challenger, Southern Indiana, to win its own Triton Invitational contested Sunday and Monday at the Norwood Hills Country Club. The Tritons posted a combined score of 304 in the opening round and followed it up with a 307 on Monday to pull further away from the rest of the 12-team field. Sophomore Maxi Roth claimed medalist honors for the first time in her college career after posting a two-day total of 145, seven shots better than runner-up Alex Trask of William Jewell. UMSL Junior Ares Boira rounded out the top three with a two-day total of 154. Alex Capesius (fourth), Stefaniya Ivanova (sixth) and Emma Thorngren (seventh) also placed in the top 10. The women’s next tournament will be the GLVC Championships April 28-30 at Annbriar Golf Club in Waterloo, Illinois.

Men’s Golf
The Tritons turned in a combined score of 294 on Sunday as they opened play at the Midwest Regional at Purgatory in Noblesville, Indiana. They sit in a three-way tie for third place heading into today’s final 18 holes, nine strokes behind leader Grand Valley State. Individually, seniors Matt Barry and Jose Acevedo and junior Markus Lindberg all shot a 73 and are tied for 14th place.

UMSL Tritons weekly rewind

The women’s soccer team saw its season come to an end with a 2-0 loss to No. 3 seed Grand Valley State on Friday in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Championship.
