UMSL Tritons weekly rewind

The men's basketball team dropped back-to-back games after moving up to No. 13 in the national rankings, and the spring sports season is underway.

Yaakema Rose helped the No. 13 UMSL rally from a 13-point second-half deficit at Truman State and scored the lay-in that pulled the Tritons even at 71. But the Bulldogs hit the second of two free throws with 0.5 seconds left to eke out a 72-71 victory, handing UMSL its second straight defeat.

Men’s Basketball
The Tritons moved up to No. 13 in the national rankings last week, only to suffer back-to-back losses for the first time this season. They fell 67-57 at Quincy on Thursday and 72-71 at Truman State on Saturday, slipping to second-place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings. Junior Jose Grubbs led UMSL with 22 points, eight rebounds and two steals in the two losses, while shooting 66.7 percent from the field. The Tritons (20-4, 11-3 GLVC) will look to rebound this week with their final regular-season road games as they travel across the river to McKendree on Thursday and to Southern Indiana on Saturday.

Women’s Basketball
UMSL extended its win streak to four games on Thursday night with a 61-56 road win at Quincy before seeing that streak snapped with a 63-58 loss at Truman State. Redshirt senior Laura Szorenyi averaged 19 points while junior Alex LaPorta added 16.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game during the Tritons’ split. UMSL (11-12, 6-8 GLVC) is at McKendree and Southern Indiana on Thursday and Saturday, respectively, in its final regular-season road games of the season.

Men’s Tennis
The Tritons opened the spring portion of its schedule on Friday with a 7-0 win over Missouri Baptist. Sophomore Adrian Lessing won at No. 2 doubles with freshman Jose Mayorga before claiming a win at No. 3 singles. UMSL (1-0) is now idle until March 7 when it plays host to Northwest Purdue.

Women’s Tennis
UMSL lost a 5-2 decision to NCAA Division I Eastern Michigan on Friday as it opened the spring portion of its schedule. Freshman Hannah Burth won at No. 3 singles and teamed with fellow freshman Maja Lietzau to win at No. 2 doubles. UMSL (0-1) returns to the court March 6, hosting Missouri Western.

Softball
The Tritons opened the 2020 season with four games in Arkadelphia, Ark., capping the weekend with an 11-2 victory over Ouachita Baptist. The Tritons dropping their first three games, falling 9-1 against No. 21 Tarleton State, 6-5 against Christian Brothers and 1-0 against Mississippi College. Freshman Annie Scaramuzzi had six hits in eight at-bats while senior Andee Tiffee drove in five runs on five hits. UMSL (1-3) will next play Friday and Saturday with four games at the Alvy Early Memorial Classic in Bentonville, Ark.
