Gateway Scholarship Program providing in-state tuition to new UMSL students from 8 surrounding states

Legal residents of Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Nebraska, Oklahoma or Tennessee will automatically qualify when they enroll as new full-time students.

The Gateway Scholarship Program will provide in-state tuition to new students from any of the eight contiguous states surrounding Missouri who enroll at UMSL beginning in the Fall 2022 semester.

The University of Missouri–St. Louis is taking steps to expand its reach and will begin offering in-state tuition to new, undergraduate students in the eight states that border Missouri beginning this fall through the newly launched Gateway Scholarship Program.

All legal residents of Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Nebraska, Oklahoma or Tennessee will automatically qualify for UMSL’s in-state tuition rates if they enroll full-time with at least 12 credit hours. New students must be enrolled full-time (12 hours or more at UMSL).

“We know the university has a lot to offer students well beyond the St. Louis region and our state, and we’re hoping more and more of them will take advantage of those opportunities through the Gateway Scholarship Program,” said Reggie Hill, associate vice chancellor for strategic enrollment. “They can learn from our expert and supportive faculty and gain work experience in a variety of industries throughout our region, all while enjoying the entertainment and cultural amenities that St. Louis has to offer.”

UMSL currently attracts undergraduate students from 45 states, plus Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, but the majority of its more than 15,000 students come from Missouri and Illinois, whose students have been able to benefit from in-state tuition since 2017.

Recruiting and retaining students from the other surrounding states will only enhance the diversity of the UMSL campus.

UMSL offers more than 70 bachelor’s degree programs, including in business, education, engineering and nursing. The university has risen 42 spots in the U.S. News & World Report “Best Colleges” rankings over the past two years, and it was ranked No. 118 among public universities on the 2022 list.
