The St. Louis Jazz Orchestra, led by Jim Widner, director of jazz studies at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, will showcase the music of Maynard Ferguson and feature the artistry of St. Louis’ own Maynard “disciple” Jim Manley. “St. Louis Jazz Orchestra: A Tribute to Maynard Ferguson” will begin at 7 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center at UMSL.

Bob Bone remains men’s basketball leading scorer 36 years later
His name still dominates the record books, and his numbers remain untouched more than three decades later. Bob Bone has cemented his name within the University of Missouri–St. Louis community since his time as a baseball and basketball All-American, where he starred for the UMSL Rivermen from 1973-77. His legendary reputation has remained intact throughout the years in the St. Louis area, as has his presence. Now the athletic director at Clayton (Mo.) High School, Bone has never let his time and experiences at UMSL escape his memory as a player, coach or professional.
UMSL welcomes new faculty for the 2013-14 academic year
More than 35 new faculty members joined UMSL for the 2013-14 academic year. The newcomers took part last week in the annual New Faculty Orientation organized by the Center for Teaching and Learning. The two-day event introduced new faculty to the ins-and-outs of the campus including a tour, informational sessions on University Libraries, informational technology and classroom resources, meetings with students, staff and administrators and an introduction to employee benefits.

Jane Birdsall-Lander’s repurposed wooden wall sculptures have the appearance of primitive objects. Jerry Monteith’s tiny and bizarre bug-like attractors are inspired by fly-fishing lures. Melody Evans’ flowing ceramic pieces are built upon a personal visual language, including the interaction between the human body and the environment.

A look back: Our one and only
As UMSL celebrates its 50th anniversary throughout 2013 with the Jubilee, it seems fitting to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the only NCAA Division II National Championship the university has won in its first half century. The men of the 1973 Rivermen soccer team are to thank, bringing home the championship trophy after blanking The University of California–Fullerton with a score of 3-0 on Dec. 8 in Springfield, Mass.

The acclaimed St. Louis-based Arianna String Quartet, resident artists at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, has announced its 2013-14 St. Louis concert series. The quartet will perform four concerts – “Out of Africa” featuring Alex Klein, oboe; “An Evening with Johannes Brahms” with pianist Johannes Brahms, “A Night at the Opera” with special guest soprano Stella Markou and “High Five” – in the E. Kate Williamson, a K-6 music specialist and Orff Schulwerk instructor from Minnesota, leads a group of music teachers through a music and movement education class during an Orff Schulwerk Certification workshop June 19 at the University of Missouri–St. Louis. The Department of Music at UMSL sponsored the workshop, which attracted nearly 50 teachers from across the region. This approach to learning, developed by Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman, builds musicianship through singing, playing instruments, speech and movement.
