University of Missouri–St. Louis junior guard Darian Cartharn has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, as announced Monday by the league office. Cartharn averaged 21.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game, while leading the UMSL Tritons to a pair of wins last week.

The win came during UMSL’s annual Pack the Stands event at Chuck Smith Court. The women’s team lost to Quincy 47-42.

The University of Missouri–St. Louis will kick off its Jubilee, a yearlong celebration of UMSL’s 50th anniversary, with a spectacular evening of entertainment and fun on Feb. 1. UMSL Chancellor Tom George talked about the Jubilee, reflected on the university’s growth over a half century and discussed challenges in higher education last week on “St. Louis on the Air,” a program on St. Louis Public Radio | 90.7 KWMU.

Coming off its best season since 2004, the University of Missouri–St. Louis baseball team is hoping for an encore in 2013. They’re being picked to do just that, according to the NCAA Division II Collegiate Baseball Newspaper’s Preseason Poll that ranked the UMSL Tritons No. 30 nationally.

Hazaria Washington, a junior forward on the University of Missouri–St. Louis women’s basketball team, helped the UMSL Tritons go undefeated last week by averaging 13.5 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals and 2.5 blocks per game. She was named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for her efforts.

Men’s golfer named GLVC best for October

University of Missouri–St. Louis junior Joe Atkisson competed in three events in October, averaging 74.4 over eight rounds en route to being named the Great Lake Valley Conference Men’s Golf Player of the Month. Atkisson was selected by a vote from the league’s men’s golf coaches. He’s only the second ever UMSL Tritons men’s golfer to earn the distinction.

Men’s soccer duo earns All-GLVC honors

The University of Missouri–St. Louis men’s soccer team wrapped a successful season Sunday, ending with a last-minute defeat in the Great Lakes Valley Conference championship game. Two days earlier, the GLVC honored two UMSL Tritons players for their contributions over the course of the season. Senior goalkeeper Patrick Ream and sophomore back Tony Auck were named to the All-Great Lakes Valley Conference Third Team.

Liz Drennan, sophomore forward on the University of Missouri–St. Louis women’s soccer team, ended her season on a high note. She scored both goals in the UMSL Tritons’ 2-1 overtime victory over Maryville University (Town and Country, Mo.) in the team’s Oct. 24 season finale. Drennan netted the game-winner just 38 seconds into the extra period.

University of Missouri–St. Louis alumnus David Archibald (BSBA 2005), Matt Hellebusch and Kelsey Cline won the third annual UMSL Tritons Golf Tournament. But the biggest winner was the Department of Athletics at UMSL. Proceeds from the event went toward the department’s 11 sports programs.

Goalkeeper’s shutout streak leads to GLVC honors

Patrick Ream, a senior goalkeeper for the University of Missouri–St. Louis men’s soccer team, held opponents scoreless over 188 minutes and 42 seconds of play last week. The two shutouts also ran his streak to four consecutive games and led to him being named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week. He is only the second men’s soccer player to earn the distinction.

2012-13 women’s tennis preview

The University of Missouri–St. Louis women’s tennis team opened the fall portion of its schedule Friday with the weekendlong Lynn Imergoot Invitational, hosted by Washington University in St. Louis. Under the direction of 11th year head coach Rick Gyllenborg, the UMSL Tritons returned three players from last year’s squad, which finished with a 9-7 overall record.

The University of Missouri–St. Louis women’s golf team has concluded each of the last three seasons in the NCAA East Regional, making the program one of the school’s most decorated in recent years. The UMSL Tritons began their trek toward a fourth straight NCAA tournament berth earlier this week with a ninth-place finish at the Smoky Mountain Intercollegiate, hosted by Carson-Newman College in Sevleirville, Tenn.

Thanks to Express Scripts, the University of Missouri–St. Louis’ carbon footprint just got smaller. With funding from the company, UMSL has completed its first solar panel installation to generate electricity. The roof of UMSL’s Mark Twain Athletic & Fitness Center, just across the street from Express Scripts headquarters, features a 25-kilowatt solar photovoltaic system that converts sunlight into electricity.

There is no doubt about it. The 2012 University of Missouri–St. Louis women’s soccer team is young. With just two seniors on the roster, the majority of the team is composed of underclassmen, including 11 freshmen.

The 2012 edition of the University of Missouri St. Louis men’s soccer team will include some old faces and plenty of new ones as well. Head coach Dan King, who enters his 12th season, returns 17 players from last year’s 8-5-4 team, including five starters. Additionally, he welcomes 11 newcomers, including seven true freshmen.

Baseball lands 5 on All-GLVC teams

The University of Missouri–St. Louis baseball team had five players earn all-Great Lakes Valley Conference honors, including a pair of first team nods to senior starting pitcher Jeremy Butler and junior outfielder John Pilackas. Junior third baseman Trevor Nathanson, junior utility player Charlie Mohr and junior designated hitter Taylor Holman were all named to the league’s second team.
