UMSL TritonApps Ready for Pilot Testing Over Summer

Information Technology Services is introducing a new service offering called TritonApps. What is TritonApps? TritonApps is a remote service technology that enables us to provide some of our applications and software that have, due to licensing constraints, only been available in IC Labs and Classrooms areas. Through TritonApps, we can now make some of the applications available to students and faculty anytime, anywhere. Over the past semester we have worked with some small groups of pilot testers who have used TritonApps in their classes to enable them to have access to software they needed and to assist ITS in working through some of the kinks that go along with any new technology. Over the summer months we expect to expand on our pilot testing and make the testing more of a public pilot testing environment in preparation to have a robust and reliable infrastructure ready for the fall semester. Applications available through the TritonApps remote delivery today are: AMOS, GARS, SPSS, MATHCAD, MATLAB, STATA, and the MICROSOFT OFFICE 2010 SUITE.  If you are interested in checking out the new remote applications, please use IE, and go to https://tritonapps.umsl.edu/ts/en-US/Default.aspx.  We’d like to hear your thoughts and your suggestions for additional software.

  1. I’ve really enjoyed being able to use word and access school files from home.

Is there any way to transfer files to my computer from my personal student K drive when they aren’t in a format I can open with the programs listed?

I have some pdf’s on my student drive that I downloaded and forgot to transfer to my potable harddrive before the semester ended. I can’t open pdf’s in word. Is there any way to access these?

    • It is possible to transfer files between your k: drive and your home computer even if you do not have the software to open it. If you open the file through TritonApps and then go to File -> Save As… then you can select the drive (k: or c:) where you want to save it.

Also, if you need to open PDFs at home, I’d suggest Foxit PDF Reader (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/Secure_PDF_Reader/), which is free. Otherwise, you can google for “free pdf reader” to find other similar programs.

      • No, the problem is that none of the Triton apps listed are able to open pdf files, so I can’t open them at all to be able to use the “save as” function (like I’ve done for my other files).

I guess I’ll just have to wait until the school opens again on the 3rd of January.

        • Thanks for your reply.

In that case, what you’ll want to do is make a VPN connection from your home computer to UMSL’s network. The instructions on how to make the VPN connection can be found here: http://www.umsl.edu/technology/networking/vpn.html .

Once the VPN says it is connected, then you can ‘map’ your k: drive so that it appears as a local drive on your home computer. Once it is mapped, you can drag-and-drop any files between your home computer and campus drive.

To map a drive using Windows:
1.) Right-click on ‘My Computer’ or ‘Computer’ on your desktop and select ‘Map Network Drive’.
2.) In the Drive box, choose a drive letter. This is the letter that your UMSL K: drive will appear as on your home computer. It can be any drive letter that’s not already in use, but for simplicity’s sake you will probably want to choose K:.
3.) In the Folder box, type \\stl.umsl.edu\students\<first letter of your SSO\ and then hit Finish. For example, a user with the SSO xyz123 would type in \\stl.umsl.edu\students\x\xyz123.
4.) Enter your username and password when prompted.

To map a drive using a Mac:
1.) In the Finder, click on the Go menu and select Connect to Server.
2.) Enter smb://dfs-nfs.stl.umsl.edu/ssoid and then hit connect. For example, a user with the SSO xyz123 would type in smb://dfs-nfs.stl.umsl.edu/xyz123
3.) Enter your username and password when prompted.
4.) A new icon should appear on the desktop.

Now you can browse your mapped drive just like it was a local drive or flash drive connected to your home computer.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

          Thank you,
          – Ben

  2. I have yet to get Tritton Apps to work. It crashes after entering my SSO ID and password after the apps page loads, and the app page never even loads when using the latest version of Firefox (only get it to load in Explorer).

Are you working to resolve this? I would really like to be able to use SPSS and STATA from home without having to install it on my laptop.

    THanks.

    • TritonApps will only work through Internet Explorer. Firefox, Chrome, Safari, et al, do not support it. This is a limitation of those browsers and not something we can fix on our end. If (or when) those browsers support it then we will be sure to update this blog.

If you are still having issues accessing TritonApps through Internet Explorer then please contact the Help Desk at helpdesk@umsl.edu and they will be happy to help get everything straightened out so that you can use SPSS, STATA, and all the rest of the available apps.

      Thank you,
      – Ben
