The power and popularity of social media

For both a younger generation that’s active on social media — and an older generation (e.g., mine) that studies the phenomenon but is still (too often) surprised by its reach and popularity — Mashable writer Stephanie Buck provides a summary of the TV shows with the “most social media buzz” during the past week.

She wrote that “four NCAA games slam dunked their way onto our social TV chart” — but I count ten total, five spots on each of the cable and broadcast top-10 lists. Another conclusion, however, remains indisputable: The Walking Dead season finale scored #1 overall, followed by Jersey Shore at #2 overall.

I’d love to see a communication scholar investigate why those particular shows proved so engaging across social media platforms. Why were their narratives more inviting of social media chatter than the scripted and reality fare they surpassed?
