UMSL Panopto videos to One Panopto

Sent on behalf of Missouri Online | Office of eLearning

We are writing to offer clarification about the dates for the migration of UMSL Panopto videos to One Panopto. We know this is an extremely busy time for faculty and sincerely regret any added stress the migration timing has caused.

To clarify: the migration of UMSL Panopto videos to One Panopto will occur from August 27th through August 30th. During that time, faculty will not be able to access videos housed in UMSL’s Panopto instance. Videos on One Panopto will still be available and continue to be available during the migration. After Aug. 30, faculty can access the migrated videos via One Panopto.

Our office received word of this new timeline only recently and unfortunately, we do not have the ability to control the dates for any of the four-campus migrations. The instructions here offer guidance for anyone who needs to access videos housed in UMSL’s Panopto for the first week of classes.

Things to keep in mind:

  • Only the first two weeks of videos need to be migrated to allow students access
  • Please consider how this migration may impact the student experience and adjust assignment deadlines as needed
  • Utilizing the general instructions below will generate videos with a lower resolution that may affect a student’s ability to read fine details on slides with more complicated graphics
  • Captioning will not be transferred with the videos, however, auto-captioning can be turned on when the video is imported into One Canvas/One Panopto. See instructions  for how to do this
  • After August 30, all videos will be restored and no re-linking will be required. Videos manually uploaded will remain as is
  • Any videos recorded via One Canvas/One Panopto will not be impacted by this migration. They are currently available and will remain available throughout the migration.

We have contacted students to let them know that any issues with videos are due to this migration and the faculty teaching the course are not responsible for any poor video quality, etc. Below you will find the message that was sent to students, in case you’d like to include it as an announcement in your courses as well.

We appreciate the hard work involved in preparing for the start of the semester. We hope the information here will allow you to obtain the materials you need from UMSL Panopto quickly and easily. However, please don’t hesitate to contact our office with questions. We are here to help. If you need assistance or have further questions, please email Panopto@missouri.edu. We appreciate your patience as we work through the challenges of migrating to a new system and again apologize for the inconvenience this may cause.

Message to Students:

We hope your semester is off to a great start. As you can see, there have been some changes over the summer within Canvas. Between August 27-30 you may notice some videos are of a lower resolution than you are accustomed to and may not contain captions. This is a temporary issue we expect to be resolved with the completion of the video migration on August 30, when the videos will return to normal quality.

If you are experiencing accessibility issues please do not hesitate to reach out and we will resolve those. You can reach us by email at missourionline@umsystem.edu or chatting with us at teachingtools.umsystem.edu. We appreciate your patience and hope you have a wonderful semester.
