Location: Century Room A, Millennium Student Center

Description: This lecture examines the varied ways in which Greek Jews experienced World War II, and describes the particularly difficult circumstances in which Greek Jewish survivors found themselves afterward. While the entire country had been devastated by the war, Greece’s Jewish citizens faced a set of particularly vexing problems, many connected to the fundamental question: What is Greekness? This is a question that has challenged Greek society since the inception of the Modern Greek state in 1833 — and is one that in many ways is as acute today as ever. Taking the case of Greek Jews, the lecture will explore the different ways in which factors such as religion, culture, race and language shaped Greek Jewish identity during the war and beyond.
