Brooke Barczewski, a junior back for the UMSL Tritons woman’s soccer team, was named the GLVC Defensive Player of the Week.

Junior back Brooke Barczewski of the University of Missouri-St. Louis women’s soccer team has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week, as announced today by the league office. Quincy senior forward Jaclyn Mastroianni was tabbed as the GLVC Offensive Player of the Week.

Barczewski, a communication major at UMSL, takes home her first weekly nod from the conference office after helping the Tritons to a pair of shutout victories last weekend against Saint Joseph’s and Indianapolis. The St. Louis native was credited for anchoring the center of UMSL’s back line in the two victories, although Barczewski also got in the mix offensively in the 1-0 victory over U. Indy. At the 74:55 mark, Barczewski assisted sophomore Hannah Kaloupek for the game-winner.

Barczewski is the second UMSL Triton to be recognized by the league this season as teammate Sidney Allen was tabbed as the season’s first Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 9. Prior to the 2013 season, the GLVC awarded only one honoree each week, regardless of position. Barczewski is the first UMSL defender to win the top weekly honor since goalie Courtney Carmody on Oct. 21, 2003.

UMSL (4-2, 2-2 GLVC) returns to action this weekend, traveling to Wisconsin-Parkside on Friday and Lewis on Sunday.
