Chelsea Burkle is a senior outside hitter on the UMSL Tritons volleyball team.

Senior outside hitter Chelsea Burkle of the University of Missouri–St. Louis volleyball team has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office. Lewis junior Kim Vertin was tabbed as the Defensive Player of the Week.

Burkle, a nursing major at UMSL, recorded a double-double in each of UMSL’s three wins last week, while averaging 4.27 kills and 2.91 digs per set. She also finished the week with 10 block assists and five service aces.

In Tuesday’s GLVC opener against Maryville, the Marion, Iowa, native recorded 12 kills, 10 digs, three block assists and one ace in the straight set victory. 

Burkle posted her weekend best 21-kill mark in a 3-1 win over McKendree on Saturday, while also adding 10 digs and six blocks and posted an impressive .390 attack percentage.

Finally, on Sunday in a 3-1 win at Illinois Springfield, she logged her fourth double-double of the season with 14 kills, 12 digs and three service aces.

Burkle leads the UMSL Tritons in seven statistical categories including points (4.40), kills (3.82), and serves aces (0.31). This week’s award is the first for Burkle and the first for a Triton since Weslie Gaff won the award on Oct. 11, 2012.

UMSL (7-4, 3-0 GLVC) returns to action this weekend, hosting Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday at 5 p.m. and Lewis on Sunday at 1 p.m.
