Sophomore Colby Yates of the University of Missouri–St. Louis men’s golf team has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Player of the Month for September, following a vote from the league’s head coaches.

For the month, Yates posted a scoring average of 72.29, while recording a pair of top-10 finishes.

Yates opened the month by tying for third place in the season opener at the Arch Cup, hosted by the UMSL Tritons, on Sept. 3. He fired rounds of 74 and 72 to finish four strokes over par. His performance helped UMSL to the team title in the match-play format that featured the three other Division II teams from the St. Louis area, including McKendree, Maryville and Lindenwood.

Yates then recorded a runner-up finish at the Brickyard Crossing Intercollegiate on Sept. 16-17 in Indianapolis, Ind. He finished three strokes under par with a 213 (69-73-71), a score that was only topped by Adam Svennson of top-ranked Barry, who finished 14-under par. The Tritons posted a team score of 879 (291-295-293) in the 17-team field, which included nine teams ranked in the Golf World/Nike Top 25 Poll.

The Tonganoxie, Kan., native concluded the month by tying for 17th place at the Midwest Regional at Harborside in Chicago, Ill., on Sept. 29-30. The top finisher for UMSL, Yates shot a 147 (75-72), while helping the Tritons to a fifth place finish in the 33-team field with a 595 (299-296).

This is Yates’ first career monthly honor from the conference and is the first for UMSL since Joe Atkisson took home the award for the month of October 2012.
