UMSL Director of Golf Troy Halterman

University of Missouri–St. Louis Director of Athletics Lori Flanagan announced on Thursday the promotion of Troy Halterman to Director of Golf for the UMSL Tritons men’s and women’s programs. Halterman, who is in his seventh season as head coach of the men’s golf team will also assume head coaching responsibilities for the women’s team.

“We are extremely excited about naming Troy our director of golf at UMSL and making this a full-time position,” said Flanagan. “We really felt it was important to have both golf programs under one leadership and that now was the time to do it. Troy has done a terrific job in developing the men’s program into a national contender and we believe he will do the same with the women’s program.”

Halterman inherits a women’s program that has made six straight NCAA Regional Tournament appearances and in the last six years has had two individuals qualify for the NCAA Championships.

“I am very excited to have the opportunity to lead the UMSL women’s golf team,” said Halterman. “The program has a solid foundation from the hard work of James Earle, and I am honored to not only continue that success, but hopefully build on it moving forward.”

During his time directing the men’s team, Halterman has resurrected the program, leading UMSL to four NCAA Regional Tournament appearances and three NCAA Championship appearances, including the 2012-13 season when the Tritons tied for fifth place, marking the program’s highest finish. UMSL is coming off a 12th place national finish last season and is currently ranked No. 17.

“Balancing the time commitment of coaching two programs will be a new challenge, but I look forward to it,” said Halterman, a two-time Great Lakes Valley Conference Coach of the Year (2015, 2011) and three-time GCAA Midwest Region Coach of the Year (2015, 2013, 2011). “Many of the women are already familiar with me from seeing me coach the men’s team, and I think that will make it a smooth transition for all of us.

“Our goal moving forward will be to put both teams in the NCAA Championship each season and compete for the GLVC title each season. Both teams are positioned to have really solid seasons again this year.”
