Men’s Soccer
UMSL went 2-0 to open Great Lakes Valley Conference play on the road last weekend. The Tritons pulled out a 2-1 win at Southern Indiana. Nick Werner’s second-half penalty kick proved to be the game-winner. UMSL then got an early goal from Pat Ries on Sunday in a 1-0 win at Bellarmine. Senior keeper Jack Filla made six saves en route to the shutout. UMSL (3-1, 2-0 GLVC) will host Illinois Springfield and McKendree on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
Women’s Soccer
UMSL opened its season with a pair of GLVC road games, posting a 1-1 record. The Tritons scored twice in the opening 10:49 at Southern Indiana to earn the 2-0 win, but suffered a 2-1 overtime loss at No. 8 ranked Bellarmine Sunday as the Knights scored two goals in the final 5:24 to steal the win. UMSL (1-1, 1-1 GLVC) welcomes Illinois Springfield on Friday in its home opener before hosting McKendree on Sunday.
Volleyball
The Tritons went 3-0 at last weekend’s Scott Jones Classic, hosted by Trevecca Nazarene. UMSL swept previously unbeaten Alabama-Huntsville and Walsh, while taking a five-set victory over the host school. Freshman Selena Nolte averaged 2.72 kills per set while junior Danielle Waedekin averaged 5.40 digs per set. The Tritons (5-2) begin GLVC play at home this weekend, hosting Indianapolis on Friday in the home opener before entertaining Saint Joseph’s on Saturday afternoon.
Women’s Golf
UMSL shot a school-record 295 on its first 18 holes of the year on Sunday as the season opened at the Screaming Eagles Classic, hosted by Southern Indiana. The Tritons lead the six-team field and sit six strokes ahead of second-place Southern Indiana with the final 18 holes being played today. Freshman Emma Thorngren and sophomore Maxi Roth each fired a 73 and sit in a tie for third place, one shot off the lead.
Men’s Golf
UMSL opened the 2016 season by winning its sixth straight Arch Cup title last Tuesday. Junior Markus Lindberg took medalist honors with a school record 134, which included an NCAA-record-tying round of 60 in his final 18 holes. Lindberg becomes just the 10th collegiate golfer to card a round of 60. As a team, UMSL broke school records for its score of 561 and its second round of 275.
