Softball
UMSL captured the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament Championship, rolling through Illinois Springfield, Rockhurst, McKendree and Truman State en route to the program’s fourth conference tournament title in the past five seasons. Sophomore Carly Kingery pitched the Tritons to a 5-0 victory over Truman State in Sunday’s final, backed by a solo home run from senior Erin Walker and a seventh-inning grand slam by redshirt freshman Morgan Hill. UMSL (39-13) has won 13 of its past 14 games and secured the No. 1 seed in the Midwest Region of the NCAA Division II Championship. The Tritons will host a four-team sub-regional with fourth-seeded Wayne State, fifth-seeded Truman State and eighth-seeded Kentucky Wesleyan. They open against Kentucky Wesleyan at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at UMSL Softball Field. The winner of the UMSL sub-regional will advance to play the winner of this weekend’s sub-regional at Southern Indiana in a Super Regional May 18-19.
Baseball
The Tritons’ season came to an end Sunday but not before they snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 2-0 victory over Drury on a walk-off home run from junior Jacob Monti in the final game of a doubleheader on Sunday. Senior Jacob Renfrow won his team-best sixth game of the season with a complete-game shutout, allowing four hits and three walks while striking out two in his final collegiate outing. He was one of 11 seniors honored before Sunday’s doubleheader on Senior Day. Also receiving recognition were Jake Beckwith, Tanner Hudson, Damin Smith, Nick Ulrey, Jake Daily, Jordan Tharp, Jon Shanker, Kevin Smith, Andrew Bicklein and Zach Lindsay. UMSL finished the season 16-30 (10-18 GLVC).
Men’s and Women’s Golf
Both UMSL golf teams opened postseason play on Monday with the men’s golf team seed in the Midwest Regional held in conjunction with the Central Regional and hosted by Nebraska-Kearney at Awarii Dunes Golf Course in Axtell, Nebraska. The tournament continues Tuesday and concludes Wednesday. The women’s golf team is seeded third in the East Super Regional hosted by Walsh University at Glenmoor Country Club in Canton, Ohio. It also continues Tuesday and will conclude on Wednesday.
