UMSL Tritons weekly rewind

The baseball team opened its season by winning a weekend series against Harris-Stowe while the women's basketball team kept rolling, running its winning streak to 11 games.

Tom DeCero (2) and the rest of the UMSL baseball team celebrated the start of their season by going 2-1 in a weekend series against Harris-Stowe. DeCero, a junior infielder, finished with four hits, including a pair of home runs.

Women’s Basketball
UMSL ran its winning streak to 11 games, rolling to a 75-55 victory at McKendree on Thursday and a 65-42 home win over Illinois Springfield on senior day Saturday. Senior Jordan Fletcher averaged 21.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and three blocks in the two games. The Tritons (18-5, 12-4 GLVC) will close out the regular season this week, playing host to Quincy on Thursday in the home finale before traveling across town to Maryville Saturday evening for their final regular-season contest.

Men’s Basketball
Coach Bob Sundvold’s team pulled out a 79-72 senior day victory at home over Illinois Springfield on Saturday, two days after losing 88-84 on the road at McKendree. UMSL rallied from a 24-point deficit in that game, only to come up short. Junior Johnathan Matthews averaged 14.5 points in the two games and netted 12 of 13 free throws while senior Elijah Watson added 11.5 points and 6.0 assists per game. The Tritons (13-12, 8-8 GLVC) will close out the regular season this week when they play host to Quincy Thursday and visit Maryville on Saturday.

Baseball
The Tritons opened its season by going 2-1 in a three-game series against Harris-Stowe at CarShield Field in O’Fallon, Missouri. They won the opener 10-8 and rallied for a 4-3 win in 10 innings in the finale. Redshirt junior Michael Bibbs tallied five hits in two games while junior Tom DeCero finished with four hits, including two home runs, in three games. UMSL is idle until its Florida spring trip (March 3-10), during which it will play 10 games.

Women’s Tennis
UMSL opened the spring portion of its schedule Saturday with a 4-1 loss at NCAA Division I opponent Illinois State. The Redbirds earned the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3. At No. 1, graduate student Kristine Lindal and junior Salome Bleuler were tied at 6-6 when doubles were decided. ISU then claimed the match with singles victories at 1, 3 and 5. The Tritons’ point came on a default at No. 6. The team will return to the court on March 2 against another NCAA Division I opponent, Drake.

Softball
The Tritons went 1-3 at the 6-State Classic over the weekend in Emporia, Kansas. Their lone victory was a 10-7 win over host Emporia State on Saturday. UMSL fell to 5-3 against Arkansas Tech, 7-4 against Concordia-St. Paul in eight innings and 5-3 against Missouri Southern State. Redshirt sophomore Morgan Hill led the offense with eight hits, seven RBIs and three runs scored. The Tritons (3-5) will play six games this weekend in the Midwest Region Crossover, hosted by Southern Indiana in Evansville, Indiana.
