Men’s Basketball
UMSL went 1-1 last week in its return to Great Lakes Valley Conference play. Despite a strong defensive effort that saw the Tritons limit No. 1 Bellarmine to season lows of 66 points and 38.2-percent shooting, UMSL came up short in its upset bid, falling 66-53 on Thursday. The Tritons bounced back to defeat Southern Indiana 73-61, on Saturday, snapping a 15-game losing streak to the Screaming Eagles. Senior Johnathan Matthews averaged 18.5 points over the two games, making 7 of 12 from 3-point range. UMSL (11-3, 2-2 GLVC) travels to Illinois Springfield and McKendree this Thursday and Saturday, respectively. The Tritons will be playing their first true road games of the season.
Women’s Basketball
UMSL suffered a pair of losses by a combined six points last week, falling to Bellarmine 54-50 and Southern Indiana 62-60. Senior Arielle Jackson averaged 21 points in the two losses, while sophomore Alex LaPorta averaged 10.5 points and 12.5 rebounds. The Tritons (7-6, 1-3 GLVC) play their first conference road games this week, traveling to Illinois Springfield on Thursday and McKendree on Saturday.
