Men’s Golf
University of Missouri–St. Louis men’s golfer Campbell Cox birdied three of his final seven holes on his way to a final-round 67 as he claimed individual medalist honors at the Midwest/Central Region Preview at The Meadows at Grand Valley State on Tuesday in Allendale, Michigan. Cox, competing as an individual, had been in fourth place entering the final round but moved up with 4-under-par final round and finished with a total of 6-under-par 207. He beat runner-up Evan Klein of Saginaw Valley State by two strokes to collect his first collegiate victory. Benjamin Berger led the UMSL golfers playing in the team competition with a total of 218, good for a tie for 15th. Dani Solavera and Logan Mayo eached tied for 34th with totals of 223. Collectively, the 17th-ranked Tritons compiled a total score of 880, which placed sixth out of 18 teams. Tournament host Grand Valley State won the team title with a combined score of 862, beating runner-up Central Oklahoma by seven shots. UMSL next plays in the Midwest Collegiate on Sept. 28-29 at Rock Hollow Golf Club in Peru, Indiana.
Volleyball
The Tritons knocked off Southwest Baptist and Drury in successive days as they opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play at the Mark Twain Athletic Center. UMSL swept the Bearcats 25-10, 25-22, 25-20 on Friday in first home match of the year. Maggie Johnson paced the Tritons with 15 kills, Bridget Cassady added 12, and Alayna Santel had 11, and the team finished with a sparkling .424 hitting percentage. Santel led the attack on Saturday against the Panthers, finishing with a career-high 28 kills in a 16-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-12 victory. Johnson and Cassady each had 10 kills. Skylar Weaver had a team-best 23 digs, and Marly Burbach finished with 44 assists after tallying 39 against Southwest Baptist. The Tritons held Drury to a .150 hitting percentage. UMSL has now won five straight matches since losing four straight earlier this month in the Tampa Volleyball Classic. The Tritons (7-5, 2-0 GLVC) will head back on the road this week, taking on Quincy on Friday and Illinois Springfield on Saturday.
Women’s Soccer
UMSL rolled to a 5-1 victory at Indianapolis on Wednesday in the team’s lone match of the week. Devin Ellis scored a pair of goals – her first of the season – to lead the Tritons attack. She opened the scoring in the 36th minute and scored again in the 57th minute to give UMSL a 4-0 lead. The Tritons scored the first five goals of the match while peppering Indianapolis with 31 shots, 13 of them on frame. Ella Hickam, Olivia Lautz and Ella Anselm also scored. Mia Bajic scored the Greyhounds’ only goal in the 86th minute. UIndy only managed seven shots in the match. UMSL (4-1-2, 3-0-1 GLVC) will visit Lewis on Wednesday before returning home to take on Illinois Springfield on Saturday at the Don Dallas Soccer Field.
Men’s Soccer
The Tritons fell 2-0 on the road against Indianapolis in their only match of the week. The match was interrupted by a weather delay because of lightning. After the restart, the Greyhounds got goals from Joey Longo and Shayne Abrams and outshot the Tritons 13-9. Goalkeeper Lucas Ortiz made three saves in the loss. UMSL (2-3-1, 1-2-1 GLVC) will play Lewis on Wednesday in Romeoville, Illinois, before coming home to face Illinois Springfield on Saturday at the Don Dallas Soccer Field.
