Volleyball
The fourth-ranked University of Missouri–St. Louis volleyball team faced its toughest challenge of the season on Saturday and came out with its unblemished record still intact after pulling out a 21-25, 25-23, 19-25, 25-20, 15-8 victory over No. 16 Lewis on Saturday afternoon at Neil Carey Arena in Romeoville, Illinois. It was the Tritons’ first road victory over Lewis since a four-set victory on Sept. 13, 1997. Redshirt senior Delaney Humm finished with a career-best 26 kills to lead UMSL’s attack, which also got 12 kills from Mya Elliott and 11 from Lexie Rang. Kylie Adams finished with 13 digs and had four of the Tritons’ 14 aces. Caitlin Bishop finished with 49 assists. Saturday’s victory came on the heels of a 20-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-18 victory on Friday night at Great Lakes Valley Conference foe Indianapolis. Rang paced UMSL in that match with 20 kills, Humm added 18 and Hailey Flowers finished with 14. The Tritons (17-0, 5-0 GLVC) will next head to Hammond, Indiana, to compete in the Midwest Regional Volleyball Crossover tournament. They are scheduled to face Tiffin on Friday morning and Davenport on Friday afternoon with the tournament continuing on Saturday.
Men’s Cross Country
Benjamin VandenBrink and Jacob Warner raced to the top two spots and helped lead UMSL to a second-place finish in the team competition at the Brian T. Simpson Invitational held on Saturday morning at the Gans Creek Cross Country Course in Columbia, Missouri. VandenBrink won the 8-kilometer race in a time of 24 minutes, 45.22 seconds, and Warner finished a second behind. Toby Middleton placed 11th for the Tritons, who finished with 54 points, 22 behind event winner St. Mary. Middleton posted a time of 25:28.87. Jonny Key used a strong last mile to finish in 17th with a time of 25:48.01. UMSL will next race at the GLVC Championships on Oct. 21 in Bolivar, Missouri.
Women’s Cross Country
The Tritons placed sixth at the Brian T. Simpson Invitational at the Gans Creek Cross Country on Saturday morning in Columbia, Missouri. Kayley Heeter paced UMSL by finishing 15th in the 5-kilometer race in a time of 19:02.07, and Lily Wagemann joined her in the top 20, finishing 19th in a time of 19:13.15. Bella Massaro was the Tritons’ next highest finisher in 30th place with a time of 19:57.76. St. Mary won the team competition with 28 points and five of the top 10 finishers. UMSL will next run at the GLVC Championships on Oct. 21 in Bolivar, Missouri.
Men’s Soccer
UMSL had back-to-back 2-1 losses last week at Missouri S&T on Friday and No. 24 Maryville on Sunday. The Tritons fell behind early against the Saints on Sunday thanks to a goal by Yayo Mutombo in the 8th minute, but UMSL fought back to even when Devin Livingstone scored in the 62nd minute. The tie lasted only 13 minutes as Mason Crew delivered his fourth goal of the season in the 75th minute, and that proved to be the game-winner. The Tritons struck first in Friday’s match in Rolla, Missouri, as Luca Saewe scored in the 56th minute. But Mike Banazik scored twice in the space of three minutes – at 73:30 and 75:47 – to rally the Miners. UMSL (2-5-2, 1-5-1 GLVC) has now lost five in a row and will play host to Upper Iowa on Friday and Truman State on Sunday.
Women’s Soccer
The Tritons lost a pair of road matches last week, losing 2-1 against Missouri S&T on Friday and 1-0 against a Maryville team receiving votes in the national rankings on Sunday. Kayley Judy scored UMSL’s lone goal in Rolla, Missouri, in the 89th minute, but the Tritons were already in a 2-0 hole thanks to goals by Beth Roberts and Ava Hoenes. Ashlyne Hunt scored the only goal of Sunday’s match in the 54th minute for Maryville. Mary Kate Neal made a career-best six saves to keep UMSL in contention throughout, but it got outshot 15-3. The Tritons (4-4-3, 3-3-1 GLVC) will play host to Upper Iowa on Friday and Truman State on Sunday.
Women’s Golf
No. 24 UMSL finished in a tie for sixth out of 14 teams at last week’s University of Findlay William Beall Fall Classic. The Tritons finished with a combined score of 935 in the 54-hole event held at Findlay Country Club in Findlay, Ohio. Wilma Zanderau paced UMSL with a total of 225 and finished 12th. Victoria Klausner tied for 27th with a total of 232, and Momo Kikuchi tied for 45th with a score of 239, including a final-round 76. Indianapolis won the team title with a score of 880, and Tiffin’s Lisa Marie Schumacher was the medalist with a total of 215. UMSl will next play in the Nemacolin Intercollegiate Oct. 23-24 at Mystick Rock Golf Club in Farmington, Pennsylvania.
Women’s Tennis
The Tritons swept Missouri Baptist 7-0 in their final match of the fall season. Anna Domingo pulled out a hard-fought No. 1 singles match against Luana Luersen, dropping the first set 6-3 but taking the second 6-1 and winning a match tiebreaker 11-9. UMSL won all the other singles matches in straight sets with Hannah Tse taking the No. 3 singles match without dropping a game. The Tritons are idle until Feb. 3 when they open their spring schedule at Washburn.
Men’s Tennis
UMSL cruised to a 6-1 victory over Missouri Baptist as it closed out its fall schedule. The Tritons’ only blemish came at No. 4 singles where Dominick Cuchran lost in a match tiebreaker against Arkhip Tokmakov. Jose Mayorga and Juan Vigil won tight two-set matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. UMSL will open its spring schedule on the road at Washburn on Feb. 3.
