Softball
The University of Missouri–St. Louis softball team has won five of its last six games and improved to 11-4 in its past 15 after a Saturday sweep of Drury at Meador Park in Springfield, Missouri. The Tritons edged the Panthers 3-2 in the opener with starter Sasha Buckberger and reliever Ashley Borowitz combining to hold Drury to two runs on nine hits while striking out six. Kiley Sullivan had three hits and drove in a run for UMSL. The Tritons rallied from a three-run deficit to win 4-3 in Game 2. Jamie Widule and Kaytie Kossina each had RBI singles during a four-run fourth inning, and UMSL also scored on an RBI groundout and a wild pitch during the frame. Ashley Ware shut the Panthers down the rest of the way. She totaled 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, scattering four hits and two walks while striking out three. The Tritons leveled their record at 16-16 and improved to 9-3 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. UMSL will remain on the road this week with doubleheaders against McKendree on Saturday and Illinois Springfield on Sunday.
Baseball
The Tritons ran their winning streak to a season-high six games after sweeping last week’s four-game series with William Jewell in Liberty, Missouri. UMSL took Thursday’s opener 10-3 with help from two Mitch Bonczkowski home runs and another long ball from Owen Faith. The Tritons snapped a 3-3 tie with two runs in the fifth and blew the game open with a run in the sixth and four in the seventh, including RBI singles from Ethan Landis and Justin Simard. UMSL cruised to a 9-2 victory in the first game of Friday’s doubleheader as Eli Cartwright limited the Cardinals to two runs in four innings and struck out five to improve to 6-1 on the season. Bonczkowski homered again and drove in three runs. Bryce Nicolay pitched a complete game in Game 2 as the Tritons won 6-2 in seven innings. He struck out seven and surrendered only four hits. Leadoff man LJ Randle had two hits and scored two runs. Garrett Brunstetter pitched six shutout innings, striking out nine in UMSL’s 6-1 victory in Saturday’s series finale. Bonczkowski had two hits, including his 15th home run of the season. Noah Tomaras hit an RBI double for one of his two hits. The Tritons (18-14, 12-4 GLVC) will play host to Illinois Springfield on Tuesday before opening a four-game series against McKendree on Friday.
Women’s Golf
UMSL finished ninth out of 19 teams at the Grand Harbor Classic, which concluded on Tuesday in Ninety Six, South Carolina. The Tritons posted a combined score of 907 on The Patriot at Grand Harbor. Mayan Covarrubias shot a final-round 72 to close at even par 216 for the 54-hole tournament, good for a tie for seventh on the individual leaderboard. She earned Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week honors after that finish. Wilma Zanderau was UMSL’s next highest finisher with a total of 227, tied for 42nd. Emmy Wahl bounced back from an opening-round 83 and shot 74 and 76 over the last two rounds to finish at 233 for the tournament. Wingate’s Amely Bochaton and Lee’s Hannah Nall tied for medalist honors with a score of 209, and Wingate won the team competition with a total of 863. The Tritons will next play in the UMSL Spring Invitational beginning Sunday at Norwood Hills Country Club in St. Louis. It will be the team’s final tune-up before the GLVC Championship begins April 17.
Men’s Golf
The Tritons struggled to a 13th-place finish out of 15 teams at the West Florida Argonaut Invitational, which wrapped up last Tuesday at Pensacola Country Club in Pensacola, Florida. UMSL posted a combined score of 892. Trigg Lindahl was the Tritons’ top finisher, tying for 44th individually with a 54-hole score of 221, one shot better than teammate Ludvig Granlund and three in front of Benjamin Berger. Georgia Southwestern’s Sacha Coriouer was the individual medalist honors with a 54-hole score of 205. West Florida won the team title with a total of 839, three shots better than Lee. UMSL was also in 13th place at the midpoint of the Ken Partridge Invitational, which started Sunday with 27 holes at Purgatory Golf Club in Noblesville, Indiana. Lindahl one again led the Tritons at 2 over par through 27 holes. Nate Warren, competing as an individual, was the next higher UMSL golfer at 8 over. The tournament concludes Monday.
Women’s Tennis
UMSL went 2-0 in dual meets last week, beating William Woods 4-0 on Friday at the Suzanne Neal Memorial Tennis Complex in Fulton, Missouri, and topping Drury 4-1 on Saturday at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Forest Park. Hannah Tse, Aleksandra Lopez and Morgan Lint each went 2-0 in their singles matches, winning twice in straight sets at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 singles, respectively. Lint lost a total of six games in her four sets. Tse and Lopez only lost 11 games each. The Tritons won the doubles point in both dual meets. UMSL will play host to McKendree on Friday and Indianapolis on Saturday, with both duals scheduled to take place at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center.
Men’s Tennis
The Tritons went 0-2 last week, losing 4-2 in their dual meet against William Woods on Friday in Fulton, Missouri, and falling to 42nd-ranked Drury 4-1 on Saturday at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center. Daniel Berdecio picked up a pair of singles victories, beating William Woods’ Cole Horton 6-3, 6-1 in Friday’s No. 2 singles match and pulling out a 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-2, victory over Drury’s Marco Romano in Saturday’s No. 3 singles match. Percy Siercke earned the only other UMSL victory, beating the Owls’ Melo Duarte 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (11-9) in the No. 1 singles match on Friday. The Tritons will play McKendree on Friday and Indianapolis on Saturday with both dual meets scheduled at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center.
