Women’s Soccer
The University of Missouri–St. Louis women’s soccer team ran its winning streak to three after knocking off Lewis 2-1 on the road on Thursday and beating Illinois Springfield 4-1 at home on Saturday at the Don Dallas Soccer Field. Olivia Lautz and Madi Riege both scored for the Tritons as they opened up a 2-0 lead over the Flyers with just under 35 minutes remaining. Anna Linsler pulled Lewis within a goal, but Allysa Wolf kept the home team from pulling even and finished with four saves in the victory. UMSL had to come from behind against the Prairie Stars after allowing Mallory Herber to score in the 44th minute of the first half. Maddie Clark pulled the Tritons even with an unassisted goal in the 55th minute. Josie Maddox, who had an assist in Wednesday’s match, scored the go-ahead goal in the 80th minute. She also added an assist as Rachel Skyberg and Karley Kinzinger each scored in the last 10 minutes. UMSL (6-1-2, 5-0-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference) is now unbeaten since a season-opening loss at Pittsburg State. Coach Stephen Cavallo‘s team will play host to Quincy on Wednesday and Truman State on Saturday.
Men’s Soccer
The Tritons went 1-1 last week, beating Lewis 1-0 on Wednesday in Romeoville, Illinois, but losing at home to Illinois Springfield 3-2 on Saturday at the Don Dallas Soccer Field. Brady Freeman scored in the 15th minute with assists from Mario Garcia and Nico Wingren as UMSL grabbed an early lead against the Flyers, and the Tritons maintained their advantage throughout the remainder of the match despite getting outshot 13-11, including 6-3 in shots on goal. Will Winkler made six saves to record his first shutout of the season. Freeman again gave UMSL an early advantage when he scored his team-high fifth goal of the season in the 10th minute on Saturday. But Illinois Springfield scored three times before halftime to take control. Garcia scored in the 68th minute to cut the deficit to 3-2, but the Tritons got no closer despite outshooting the Prairie Stars 17-9. UMSL (3-4-1, 2-3-1 GLVC) will play host to Quincy on Wednesday and Truman State on Saturday.
Volleyball
UMSL has won seven straight matches after beating Quincy and Illinois Springfield on the road over the weekend. The Tritons pulled out a 25-21, 25-16, 19-25, 24-26, 15-10 win over the Hawks on Friday evening. Skylar Weaver had a career-high 38 digs to lead UMSL’s defense, which held Quincy to .229 hitting. Bridget Cassady had a team-high 19 kills in the win, and Maggie Johnson and Alayna Santel add 17 and 15, respectively. The Tritons were more dominant in a 25-21, 25-8, 25-13 win over the Prairie Stars on Saturday. UMSL outhit Illinois Springfield .319-.053. Santel finished with a match-high 14 kills, Johnson had 13 and Cassady 10. Marly Burbach totaled 96 assists in the two victories. The Tritons (9-5, 4-0 GLVC) will return home to take on Truman State on Friday and Upper Iowa on Saturday at the Mark Twain Athletic Center.
Men’s and Women’s Cross Country
The Tritons cross country teams raced at the Gans Creek Classic, held Friday morning at the Gans Creek Cross Country in Columbia, Missouri. The men finished in 20th place. Julio Cruz Jr. was the team’s top finisher, placing 97th on the 8-kilometer course with a time of 26 minutes, 49.1 seconds. Kebeb Zimmerman and Armando Montoya posted times of 28:09 and 28:28, respectively. The women didn’t post a team score, but Elektra Alcantar was UMSL’s fastest individual finisher with a time of 27:05.5 on the 6-kilometer course. The Tritons will race again on Saturday in the Chile Pepper Festival at Agri Park in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
