MADCO, the resident dance company at UMSL, often collaborates with the Department of Music at UMSL, including for the upcoming performance of "Pulse!" at the Touhill.

When MADCO takes to the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center stage for its 35th season opening performance, it will do so to a livelier sound than prerecorded music, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. MADCO, the resident dance company at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, tapped the talents of Matt Henry, director of percussion studies at UMSL, for music direction on the six pieces that will make up “Pulse!” An Oct. 1 St. Louis Post-Dispatch article by Calvin Wilson focused on this interdepartmental collaboration at UMSL and previewed the concert.

“It’s completely different than recorded music – in what you feel and what you experience – when you’ve got that live music right there next to you,” MADCO Executive and Artistic Director Stacy West told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “The opportunity for an audience to feel that rhythm is unlike anything else.”

The article also touched on the opportunity the concert will present for UMSL music students.

“(In addition to college credit) they get compositional experience, arranging experience and dance accompaniment experience, which is extremely valuable,” Henry told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

“Pulse!” will feature compositions by UMSL music education seniors John Nuckols and Matthew Wiseman. The concert will begin at 8 p.m. Oct. 7 and Oct. 8 with a pre-show discussion scheduled to begin at 7:10 p.m. each night.

Tickets are $21 to $23. Visit touhill.org or call 314-516-4949 to order tickets.
