Barbara Harbach, professor of music at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, is called “a world renowned musician and professor” and “advocate for women in the arts” on the latest episode of “Impact” on HEC-TV. A segment on the program focuses on Harbach’s efforts as the director of the UMSL-based Women in the Arts initiative. (Click above to view the entire clip.)
The initiative began in 2005 with a yearlong celebration of creative women featuring hundreds of artistic performances, exhibitions, conferences and educational events at UMSL and throughout greater St. Louis.
Jim Althoff of HEC-TV visited Harbach at the Women in Arts Center at UMSL to discuss the next phase of the initiative, which would include collaboration among several academic departments at the university.
“The first thing that we’re setting up this spring is a mentoring program,” Harbach said on HEC-TV. “And the mentoring program will be not only for young women in the arts, but for all ages of women in the arts.”
In addition, the program mentioned a $2 million commitment made by Harbach and her husband, UMSL Chancellor Tom George, to support the university and the initiative. Jim Richards, associate dean for academic affairs in the College of Fine Arts and Communication at UMSL, is quoted in the segment, which also features footage of several UMSL students and faculty members.
The “Impact” episode featuring Harbach and Women in the Arts first aired on April 21. HEC-TV will replay the episode at 7:30 p.m. every Wednesday for a month. HEC-TV can be viewed on Charter Channel 26 in St. Louis and St. Louis County, AT&T U-verse Channel 99 and iTunes.
Harbach is fresh off a concert of organ music by women composers Sunday (April 25) at St. Ita’s RC Church in Chicago. She performed her original organ music and compositions by Fanny Mendelssohn, Elizabeth Stirling, Jeanne Demessieux and Sharon Willis. The Chicago Chapter of the American Guild of Organists presented the concert.
The prolific music scholar also has a new book forthcoming from Cambridge Scholars Publishing. Harbach edited “Women in the Arts: Eccentric Essays in Music, Visual Arts and Literature” with Diane Touliatos-Miles, Curators’ Professor of Music and director of The Center for the Humanities at UMSL.
