Senior Jeremy Butler struck out 14 batters across 16 innings of pitching to help the University of Missouri–St. Louis baseball team secure two wins last week. And during the same week sophomore Louisa Werner went undefeated in eight singles and doubles matches for the UMSL women’s tennis team.
The Great Lakes Valley Conference honored both UMSL Tritons naming Butler Pitcher of the Week and Werner Player of the Week. This is the second time Werner has received the honor this season.
Butler went nine innings in his first start last week, allowing four hits while striking out nine batters in a 5-1 victory over Alderson-Broaddus College (Phillippi, W. Va.). He followed with a seven-inning outing in a 5-3 decision over No. 15 ranked University of Southern Indiana (Evansville). Butler struck out five in the upset to move to 3-0 on the season while registering a 1.69 ERA for the week.
The UMSL Tritons stand at 7-7 overall for the season with a 1-3 record in the GLVC. The team will return to action today (March 21) in a game against No. 2 ranked University of Central Missouri (Warrensburg).
Werner, who was also named GLVC Player of the Week March 6, failed to drop a game in her 6-0, 6-0 singles victory March 13 against the Lindenwood University–Belleville (Ill.). She then teamed up with Pujitha Bandi to take an 8-6 victory at the No. 1 doubles slot to help the Tritons to a 6-3 team victory.
Werner returned to the courts the following day to tab a 7-5, 6-4 win over NCAA Division I foe Southeast Missouri State University’s (Cape Girardeau) Nikole Novikova. She and Bandi then tallied another 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles.
On Saturday, Werner helped guide the Tritons to an 8-1 victory over McKendree University (Lebanon, Ill). She dominated at No. 1 singles breezing to 6-0, 6-0 wins, and once again teamed with Bandi to post an 8-2 victory over in doubles play.
In an overnight turnaround, Werner returned to help the Tritons claim an 8-1 victory over conference opponent Southern Indiana University on Sunday afternoon. She won singles matches 6-3, 6-2 and posted an 8-4 double victory with Bandi.
