Charlie Woods, a forward on the University of Missouri–St. Louis men’s basketball team, played a key role in the UMSL Tritons opening the 2012-13 season with a pair of regional victories. In doing so, he was recognized by the Great Lakes Valley Conference as its Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.
Woods, a senior majoring in psychology, averaged 15 points, eight rebounds and 28 minutes per game. He also finished with four blocked shots and four assists on the week while shooting 68.8 percent from the field, including 66.7 percent from three-point range.
In the Tritons’ 91-71 season-opening victory over Lake Superior State University (Sault Sainte Marie, Mich.) on Friday, Woods finished with seven points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots. His efforts helped UMSL to its first win over LSSU in three years of competing in the Coca Cola GLVC-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Challenge.
Woods then poured in a game-high 23 points on 8-of-11 shooting on Saturday in the 92-88 win over Northwood University (Midland, Mich.). The Lansing, Mich., native also grabbed nine rebounds and dished out three assists while going a perfect four for four at the free throw line.
Woods garnered the first weekly honor of his career and became the first Tritons men’s basketball player to claim the award since Ryan Lawrence was recognized on Nov. 20, 2009.
