Volunteers pose after constructing flower beds and planting foliage in front of the South Campus Computer Building at UMSL.

The University of Missouri–St. Louis campus received a little “color and personality” this month thanks to several volunteers.

With funding from the UMSL Program Jubilee Committee, faculty, staff, students and members of the community planted various evergreen red and yellow foliage by the University Child Development Center and the Kathy J. Weinman Advocacy Centre on South Campus as well as the “UMSL in Glass” wall on North Campus.

Patricia Zahn, director of the Des Lee Collaborative Vision and manager of community outreach and engagement at UMSL, is chair of the Jubilee Program Committee.

“This project was really a great way to bring the UMSL community together — students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends — to add to the beautification of the campus,” Zahn said. “We are very thankful to all the volunteers, and especially to UMSL horticulturist Carol Usery for helping us identify sites and prepare them for the new landscaping.”

Members of the The E. Desmond Lee Regional Institute of Tutorial Education Program directed by Judith Cochran, the E. Desmond Lee Endowed Professor of Tutorial Education at UMSL, took on the child center and transformed the entrance to the South Campus Computer Building by constructing two flower beds next to the neighboring South Campus Computer Building and filling them with several blue, purple and pink plants. The beds are lined with PotsToPlanks timbers made from recycled plastic pots. Click here to see a slide show of before and after photos.
